Album Notes

The Woodbridge Flute Choir, currently directed by Debbie Gilbert and assisted by Lisa Sheldone, was founded in 1996 by Rebecca Jeffreys as an outlet and learning experience for volunteer adult flutists. In the past ten years, the choir has progressed from a modest background music group to a serious performance ensemble.

Since its inception, the WFC has performed at regular concert series, charitable and gala events, Flute Society of Washington events, flute choir festivals, the National Flute Association convention, the Kennedy Center, and the White House.

The group has also produced three commercial CDs, Woodbridge Suite, Passages, and A Silver Christmas, each featuring music written specifically for the ensemble.

As part of its mission to educate its members and the Washington area flute community, the Choir has sponsored master-classes and performed with internationally acclaimed flutists Per Oien, John Barcellona, Tadeu Coelho, Chris Potter, Alexa Still, Thomas Robertello, and Nan Raphael.

In recognition of the need for new music written specifically for flute choir, the WFC has commissioned and presented world premieres of original works by Gretchen Morse, Nancy Wood, Lee Larsen, Mel Lauf, Russell Nadel, and Jonathon Cohen. In the autumn of 2006 the Choir celebrated its tenth anniversary with the premiere of a new commissioned work from Alexandra Baldwin.

The Woodbridge Flute Choir is one of the largest and most successful ensembles of its kind in Northern Virginia. Its unique focus on educating the adult flutist has made it a much desired ensemble for area musicians and has resulted in a waiting list for membership.

Beautiful music!

I was floored when I listened to this CD. When I first heard the term "flute choir," I almost laughed. How exciting could that be? But as I listened to this recording, I discovered a sound I hadn't heard before. The music that the Woodbridge Flute Choir produces is truly remarkable. "Pedazitos" had such energy that made me want to get up and dance! The haunting story of "Hear My Voice" sent chills up my spine. The two selections by Melvin Lauf Jr., "Running Away" and "Southern Peace," showcases both the choir's beautiful phrasing and the composer's brilliant understanding of the needs of this type of ensemble. Founding Director Rebecca Jeffrey's solo performance during "Furry Leaves" is breathtaking. This CD opened my eyes to a genre of music I hadn't appreciated before. BUY THIS RECORDING NOW!

"Passages" is a very nice addition to my CD collection. The music is really beautiful. The playing by these folks is inspiring. My wife and I listen to it often around the house. I have even played it for my kids and now my five-year-old wants to learn the flute! Bravo to the Woodbridge Flute Choir.

With refined musicianship and dynamic expressiveness, more than 15 flutes portray a unified and integrated stereo sound that truly is a charismatic choir of woodwind wonder.
