Word Out was formed in 2007 by British pianist Jim Funnell, Maltese bass player Oliver Degabriele and French drummer Thibault Perriard. They work together into making the compositions and arrangements of the pianist their own, in a jazz idiom which revels in mixed breeds. They self produced their first album (“Word Out”) in 2009 and won the 1st composition prize at the "Trophées du Sunside" (Paris) in 2011.

The bands’ influences include (but are not limited to!) Ahmad Jamal (use of space and orchestration), Wayne Shorter (taste for interaction), Danilo Perez (thirst for exploration of the musical realm), Thelonious Monk (swing and humorous nature), Eric Dolphy (edgy melodic lines), David Fiuczynski (fondness of heavy and exotic grooves!), Nguyen Lê, EST, The Bad Plus, Meshell Ndegeocello, David Bowie, Radiohead…

Here's a couple of things people said about the record...

"Your album is fucking sick man. The whole sound of it is really good (mix and mastering etc.) I really like your tunes too and the playing is burning except for a thirteen flat nine chord which is clearly a mistake." - Ant Law, Guitarist & Composer

"I liked the CD very much. My favorite tracks were "Space Oddity" - great energy, emotion and arrangement - and "Giant Steps" - I like how the harmonization and time flow. The detuning is hip on "What Is This Thing" and it does sound like a new tune. I recognized "Still Untitled' and "Beans On Toast" from before, I've always liked those... The high register comping idea and the solo in the middle of "Cheer Up George" are effective and innovative. I also like the groove and feel of "Asteroid" - nice counterpoint and bright lyrical playing! Overall, it sounds like a very good CD and a good band." Laszlo Gardony, Jazz Pianist & Composer
