When Satan and God had sex, the big bang happened. However since Satan was prone to multiple orgasms another bang happened.... and that's how Workshop was formed.
A polyrythmic drummer, a classic rock chromatic scale playing bassist, an Apollonian quest that lost its way and a fiery demonic monster all combined, with their powers united as one, a musical comedy of sorts is the best way to define the creative power of the Workshop.
Playing a vast span of genres ranging from EMO to Garba to Bhangra to Pop but all injected with the venom of demonic metal is what the musical creations of Workshop could be classified under.

khooni murga : one of the best metal albums of the year for sure
author: mikhail madnani
The first thing that I realized was that the mix on this album is absolutely phenomenal. Every instrument can be heard clearly. I always expect great things from Sahil Makhija and he definitely delivered on this one. Gathering some of the best musicians on the scene and forming a comedy metal band was a perfect idea.
The Artwork: A lot of hard work has gone into the artwork for the album and is noticed on the album cover itself. Each song has individual art and there are more drawings thrown in for fun. The art was done by the well known artist Saroj Naidu. 5/5
The Packaging: The album comes in a standard double cd jewel case along with a DVD. The first pressing of the album comes with a poster and sticker of the band logo. The jewel case is a little poor quality in my opinion but this small drawback is overshadowed (shadow of darkness) by the rest of the package. 4/5
The Album:
Here is a song by song breakdown of the album:
She folked up my jazz: this is a brilliant album opener. I absolutely love the song. The lyrics are great and so is the overall music. We all know this band has brilliant musicians on it but the output super group is quintessential. This song has crunchy riffs and inane melodies. But don’t get fooled by the title. It is not a jazz song per say besides the last section. Raj (lead guitarist) has delivered perfect melodies with his arpeggios in the middle. I had seen this song live a number of times and also heard the demo but the final version has encapsulated everything I had hoped for in the song and hey it’s fun to play the song as well. 9/10
Pudhe sarka: this song has a few Marathi (language spoken in Maharashtra, India) lines in it. It’s a song about travelling by bus in Mumbai and dealing with difficult bus conductors and ticket checkers. This is one of the heaviest songs on the album. The drums are brilliant on this one. The bass can be heard nicely and it is done well thanks to Mr. Riju (bassist). This song has a really nice guitar solo on it as well. 9/10
I Came: this is a song all guys and maybe a few girls? (I highly doubt this :P) can relate to. This is one of the highlights on the record. It has all aspects of a classic: good intro, melody, catchy riffs, side splittingly funny lyrics and obviously a GUITAR SOLO. It’s a song about masturbation and porn. I mean these are the only guys that can get away with a chorus “I’m so excited as she blows” or “here I am with my loaded gun, its pointed at you baby...here i come!” The guitar harmonies really stand out on this one. The ending section is beyond words. Anyway I better switch over to the next song before daddy comes. 10/10
Chhati Ke Saath Panga: This is probably the weakest song on the album in my opinion. It’s in Hindi and about kamladevi in the jungle etc. This song was originally on the reptilian death (sahil makhija’s old project) album total annihilation as a bonus track. This song has good music but I don’t really like it. It has a nice short solo in the middle. 5/10
Garba Gandu: A Gujarati song with humorous lyrics? Nice double bass on this one. The drums on this are similar to the dandiya festival drums. Nice guitar work on this one as well. The final section of the song is the funniest and needs to be heard to be believed. 7/10
How To Make A Demonic Omlet: This is the only rap (WTF) song on the album. The lyrics are very funny and it gets its title from the fact that Sahil Makhija is an excellent cook and has his own recipes for many things and since he is the demonstealer everything he does is demonic. Nice DJ scratching on the guitars on this track. 8/10
Kothai Doro Cho: This is the best song on the album and one of the best metal songs I’ve heard this year for sure. It has drums reminiscent of meshuggah’s bleed. It has some of the best rhythm guitar work ever. It’s an absolute monster live. It’s about a person who needs to crap really badly who is running all over. The title is in Bengali and it means “where am I running to?” or something of that sort. Any guitarist who wants to improve their right hand strength needs to play this song. Sahils vocals have really improved since I heard him sing for the first time. There are some vocal effects to add to the comedy element as well. The section after “the shit has hit the fan” will make your mom headband as well. It’s a kickass heavy song and I love it. 11/10
Bunty Aur Mallika Sherwath: This is the song that introduced most to workshop. It is in Hindi and has a mind numbingly funny video. It’s about 2 fictional movie characters from India cinema bunty aur babli. It also involves a certain large breasted Indian actress. This song has 2 face melting solos. This was the first single from the album. 8.5/10
Cookie Monster: This is not to be confused with the cookie monster from Sesame Street. It is about internet chatting and relationships and sleep? Yes I mean it. The first reaction when someone hears this is confusion because it stands out. It is not a normal workshop song. It is musically the best song according to me. The song has the front man Sahil trying his hand at a guitar solo as well. The lyrics are brilliant on this one. This is the second single from the album and the video released is on the bonus DVD but more on that later. 10/10
Khooni Murga: Murderous cock indeed. This is the title track. It is another song that has made it through from a rough demo on the previously mentioned Reptilian Death album. It was known as khooni murDa then. This song has the best drumming on the album for sure. I remember Sahil saying he used programmed drums on the reptilian death album and he didn’t think it was possible to recreate them live. But Hamza delivered. No not twins I meant on the drums. It also has the bassist Riju saying A DARKNESS DESCENDS after the line andhera ho gaya which roughly translates to the same thing. The guitar solo on this song will take you to the times of the pharaohs and pyramids in Egypt. It is another really heavy song and borrows a slight influence from Punjabi bhangra songs. Can you imagine a Punjabi and Egyptian influence in one song? This is it. 10/10
Overall on the music: 4.5/5
The DVD: Another thing that needs to be said is Workshop is the first Indian band to release a DVD along with a cd. The DVD contains a lot of live footage of the band performing at various clubs and college festivals. It also has the official video for the song Cookie monster. The DVD authoring and the menu is nice and animated. All the recording blogs released from time to time by the band showcasing them creating this album are also included. The DVD also has their entire hard rock cafe performance with a twist.
4.5/5
