ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Goldberg Variations, a name given not by Bach, but by Forkel in his 1802 treatise on the life and music of Bach, in which he relates the story that Bach wrote them for Count Kaiserling to be played by Bach’s pupil Johann Gottleib Goldberg. This story is most likely fictitious, but over time, the name has stuck. They were originally given the title “ Keyboard-practice, consisting of an Aria with different variations for the harpsichord with two manuals. Prepared for the enjoyment of music-lovers by Johann Sebastian Bach, Polish royal and Saxon electoral court-composer, director and choirmaster in Leipzig.” I think that the shorter name is much easier to remember.

The entire group has an interesting structure. Every third piece, beginning with the third variation, is a canon, each in turn beginning on the next successive scale note. Interestingly enough, the “overture” is placed in the middle.

Variation 3: canon at the unison

Variation 6: canon at the second

Variation 9: canon at the third

Variation 10: fughetta

Variation 12: canon at the fourth

Variation 15: canon at the fifth

Variation 16: overture

Variation 18: canon at the sixth

Variation 21: canon at the seventh

Variation 24: canon at the octave

Variation 27: canon at the ninth

Variation 30: Quodlibet (a Latin term that means “what pleases”. It consists of a compilation of different popular melodies of the time, set in counterpoint.)

The group begins and ends with a statement of the “Aria,” the subject on which the variations are based. The Aria also appears as a Sarabande in Anna Magdalena Bach’s notebook of the year 1725.

Overall, this is a challenging and ultimately delightful collection of pieces, encompassing a wide variety of moods and tempos.

Enjoy!

Wynn Erickson
