Great CD of masterful flute playing
author: Joe M
This CD, "Voices in the Wind" from Gary Yamane is a delight in many ways. Not only is he a master flute player but he has taken the Cedar flute to new heights and has set a new standard for playing this traditional flute. The CD has an improvisational feel yet there are clearly arranged compositions. The bluesy "Blue Silk" is jazzy and hip and somehow the Cedar flute sounds right at home. The mournful sounds on "Lament" capture the horror and sadness of the 9/11/01 incidents with amazing clarity. This piece will be played in years to come to help us remember our emotions and feelings regarding the attacks. "Return of the Buffalo Suite" is a pow wow on CD---drums, prayers and rock and roll---check it out! And as if that weren't enough, the colors of Balinese Suling and silver flutes are added on other tracks---this CD covers a wide range of genres and styles and is never boring. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves good music.

Diverse sounds and tones from the flute family !
author: Laura T. Lynch of Kweevak.com
Voices in the Wind is a beautiful blend of traditional and contemporary flutes. Yamane plays a varied selection of wind instruments such as the cedar flute, Balinese suling, silver flute and ocarinas. His songs span a wide range of styles from the sounds of the southwest to the world beyond. The twelve tracks are stories of life, nature and current events. This is eclectic mix that includes touches of jazz, classical, new age and Native American. Yamane accents his fabulous flutes with steady drums that echoes of the past and modern synthesizers that give his music a contemporary feel. 'Morning,' the opening track, is peaceful and promising like the start of a new day. 'Blue Silk' is smooth and flows in meditative tones. 'Return of the BuffaloSuite' is based on a poem from the Lakota nation. It is a fifteen-minute epic that brings the listener back to a fireside in which the legends of the tribe are shared. Voices in the Wind is an incredible instrumental CD!
