This 26-year old Belgian singer-songwriter and musician has it all. She knows damn well what she wants... or how to sing and write a song!
Initially, Yanah's compositions were kind of acoustic folk songs. Working with producer and songwriter Eric ("E-Rick") Geurts turned them into melodious rock songs with an ethnical atmosphere. Yanah's basic tunes received a brand new shape through a powerful electrical injection, and the addition of Yanah's acoustic guitar, piano, flute and didjeridoo.
"I love to see how music lives, how my songs grow as they get arranged. Subtle changes can push a song into a complete new direction. I realise how bare my songs were originally, although I still cherish the early, acoustic versions. I think I'll save them up for an Unplugged album when I'm famous! (laughs)."
From April 2002 till June 2003, a bunch of songs were recorded at E-Rick's "Flying Snowman" studio. A crucial step was the recording of acoustic instruments (fiddle, tin whistle, flute, guitar, piano, african percussion, tabla and didjeridoo, played by Yanah or different guest musicians like Dirk Naessens from Urban Trad, and Patrick Riguelle). The exotic instruments colour the songs with a Celtic, African or Indian vibe, exactly the kind of touch Yanah was looking for.
The album "The Girl In The Picture" contains 14 pearls of melodic ethno-poprock. The title is based on the life of Kim Phuc, once the screaming naked 9-year-old girl in the world-famous picture taken by Nick Ut after a napalm bomb attack in South Vietnam. When confronted with the song, the lyrics and the infinite beauty of Yanah's voice, Kim Phuc was deeply touched. Kim and Yanah met each other on September 24th 2003. That day, Kim came to Brussels to receive the first copy of the single "The Girl In The Picture". All profits of the song are donated to Kim's organisation, supporting child victims of war all over the world.
January 2004, Yanah opened the Eurosong preselections in Belgium, with "Yes or No", a catchy guitar rock song. Yanah received a lot of positive reactions and votes.
Currently, Yanah is touring with her 5-piece live band. Yanah's first album was released on the 4th of May, 2004 during a press conference in Brussels.

This is pop, but it's the kind of pop that rocks...
author: Rej dLRey
Pros: With real instruments and an "I do what I do" kind of integrity, it is highly recommended.
Cons: A bit pricey in amazon but fair in tower records, best value for your money on CD baby.
Songs: Yanah's songs are danceable yet rock-wired, the acoustic songs are catchy but honest and the two (2) bonus instrumental tracks of ethnic-electric rips are very original. Intense modern upbeat songs mixed with ethnic instruments show that Yanah's lyrical and musical style is definitely pop, but it's the kind of pop that rocks.
