"Isn't Pretty" is the bang-up third release in seven years. Its predecessors "What Grenade ?1?" (2003) and "Pink Insides" (2005) show a clear progression of songwriting and skill growth. Ya Ya Boom climbed the candy mountain, and the peak is in sight. It's latest effort, recorded and mixed at guitarist Carlos Garcia's studio, is a sugary effort with a hints of sour and a hint of afterpunch.

In less metaphoric terms, we're talking intricate vocal harmonies, swelling bass lines, complex rhythms, hook-laden guitars and exploding choruses.

Ya Ya Boom has never been the same band twice. The group never wrote the same song twice, and every year brings new experiments adorned with biting hooks and lavish effects. Bolder, more confident, after two micro-tours and plenty of time in Albuquerque's scene, Ya Ya Boom crackles and pops, twists and spins, and finds its lollipop heart dangling dangerously over the edge.
