In March 2006, Years of Static will release their latest effort, On the Lam. This special limited edition Vinyl CD was recorded and produced by the band, and the record is a sonic travelogue of the recording itself. Literally recorded on the lam, the band was forced to break down the studio and move constantly to avoid it all being repossessed. This duress, however, provided the stimuli for a great record. From the crashing opening of “On a Mission” to the soaring chorus of “Watch the Sky” to the epic finale of “All the Young Dudes”, On the Lam will simultaneously kick your ass and make you cry.
Mike Cristi (Non Fiction) and Scott Mueller (Dog Eat Dog) formed Years of Static in 2000. Their first album, 'this is not a test...', caught the attention of Modern Records, who signed the group for their follow up, "Spirit", released in 2004. After touring the world with their prior bands, both records showcased a songwriting maturity well beyond their years. From the chugging "Finally" and emotional apogee of "Celebration Song" off their debut to the heartbreak of "Miserable" and full rock assault of "Make Us Small" off "Spirit", Years of Static was determined to make brutally honest music in an era of manufactured pop idols.
In 2005, seemingly by accident, the duo would come to a crossroads. Whilst most of the studio recordings were completed with just Mike and Scott, live work saw them utilizing hired guns and an ever revolving door of session musicians. When their live lead guitarist had a scheduling conflict preventing him from making a gig, Mike called an old friend.
Guitarist Cal Michaels (Vainglorious/Nova Express), a veteran of the NYC rock n roll scene and Mick Ronson fanatic, was in the process of putting together a group when he received Mike's call. "Mike asked if I could fill in and learn their set in a week", recalls Cal. "I didn't initially think of it as a full time gig, as I thought what they did and what I did were in different buildings. But the show went well, the songs were great, and we all got off. We seemed to complement each other. So when they offered me the gig, I thought this could work. Then they agreed to find a permanent drummer and make this a band. That's all it took, really."
