Ygdrassil is an artistic, truly original duo, a bit like a mix between Talking Heads and Joni Mitchell. Plus then some elements of medieval music, and a bit of “Sonic Youth done acoustically”, or whatever. I’m not sure if this is their best record – I personally liked their second CD Pieces very much, and wasn’t quite that impressed by this one at first listening. The symbolism of the lyrics of the former kind of brings a young Elvis Costello to mind a little bit, while the latter is a bit more in the vein of David Byrne or The Talking Heads. Then for example the third, fourth and sixth track are very good, too. Ygdrassil probably isn’t for everyone.
