Album Notes

YOON SUN CHOI

Raised just outside of Toronto, Yoon Choi studied
classical piano and composition at Queen's University
in Kingston, Ontario where she received her first
degree. Yoon spent a semester at the Berklee College
of Music before deciding to make the leap into jazz.
She went on to receive her second degree in jazz
performance in voice at the University of Toronto.

Yoon has played with some of Canada's best jazz
musicians and international jazz artists such as
Stefan Bauer, Brian Dickinson, Mark Dresser, Mark
Feldman, Jeff Hirsfield, D.D. Jackson, Sam Newsome,
Roy Patterson, Andrew Rathbun, Deidre Rodman, Jacob
Sacks, Ed Schuller, Judi Silvano, Kevin Turcotte,
Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler, just to name a few. She
has performed regularly in Toronto and New York City
and has toured across Canada and the U.S.

In Toronto, Yoon was part of an innovative trio
collective, Kairos, with Chris Jennings (bass) and
Mark Adam (drums) which performed original works and a
collective quintet, Energia, with Roy Patterson
(guitar), Roy Styffe (alto saxophone), Jim Vivian
(bass), and Barry Romberg (drums). She was also leader
of her own quartet.

In 2000, Yoon was the recipient of an Ontario Arts
Council award which allowed her to study in New York
City, where she has since settled.

In New York City, Yoon has a duo project with pianist
Jacob Sacks. In 2002, they released their debut CD,
Soulmates. The Ottawa Citizen listed Soulmates as one
of the best albums of 2002. She is also part of a
collective quintet, 4inOjbects with David Ambrosio,
Jacob Garchik, Jacob Sacks and Dan Weiss, and plays
regularly with Rob Garcia's group Sangha. This fall,
Yoon performed a lead role in George Elliot Clarke and
D.D. Jackson's jazz opera, Quebecite, at the Guelph
Jazz Festival and at the Vancouver Jazz Festival.
