Album Notes

"Shoot the Sun" marks the debut release of ZAHA on Snapback Records. This album, a collage of snapshots from one wintry afternoon in December 2008, documents the art of live composition, where composer Evan Mazunik crafted works in-studio with his ensemble of improvisers using Soundpainting, graphic scores, cryptic verbal cues, and spur-of-the-moment arrangements. Flute, sax, accordion, electric viola, guitar, bass and drums are configured in various duos, trios, and chamber groups for an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of sound.

Soundpainting, the universal live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation, continues to fuel, drive, guide, and inspire Evan Mazunik in his work with ZAHA, his ensemble of choice since 2006.

Justin Wood: alto sax, flute
Frantz Loriot: viola
Sebastian Noelle: guitar
Ryan Kotler: bass
Eric Eigner: drums
Evan Mazunik: live composition, accordion
