Album Notes

THE “INFLUENCES” PROJECT
Two versatile musicians, both multi-instrumentalists with several live and studio experiences, Alessio Alberghini and Tiziano Zanotti have developed this project with the aim of exploring and interpreting their musical influences.

Starting from the ten tracks of “Influences” (Echoes 2007), their first CD as a duo, and using just double bass and soprano sax, they perform a repertoire of jazz standards, generating new sounds and colours and experimenting uncommon improvisation lines.

The challenge is made more exciting by the deliberate absence of distinctively harmonic or percussion instruments: by dismantling and remounting the structures of the jazz music, going back and forth between its typical language and other fascinations, the two musicians overcome the traditional roles of their instruments to exploit them in every possible way.

INFLUENCES REVIEWED BY:

Mario Calvitti - Chitarre, November 2007:
"...i due musicisti riescono a mantenere viva la tensione grazie alla purezza del fraseggio tipicamente jazzistico, col ritmo sottostante costantemente implicato"

Piero Quarta - Prove Aperte, October 2007:
"...Tiziano Zanotti e Alessio Alberghini sono due musicisti che hanno talento musicale da vendere... "Influences" è un cd da far ascoltare anche ai fini didattici"

Vittorio lo Conte - All About Jazz, October 2007:
"...Entrambi bravissimi agli strumenti, ma pure, che è quel che più conta, molto ispirati in questa occasione"

Carlo Pulici - www.thevibes.net, September 2007:
"...una specie di gemma che brilla in un panorama musicale abbastanza privo di idee davvero innovative"

Robert Iannapollo - Cadence Magazine, September 2007:
"... What's intriguing is the range of sources that runs the gamut from Bird to John Scofield... a solid effort"

www.jazzworldquest.com, May 2007:
"...Influences is the work of a very special duo"

Ivan Masciovecchio - www.rockshock.it, May 2007:
"…Dieci piccole schegge, dieci piccoli lampi di genio creativo"

Lucio Mazzi - City, May 2007:
"…Un disco che pretende attenzione e ripaga con emozioni. Non capita spesso, quando succede approfittiamone"

Stefano Solventi - www.sentireascoltare.com, April 2007:
"…I due pescano dal Real Book una decina di pezzi storici e li ripercorrono con sagacia e brio, brandendo gli strumenti con naturalezza e intensità"

THE MUSICIANS

ALESSIO ALBERGHINI - Flutes, saxophones, clarinets, composition

After graduating at the “G.B. Martini” conservatoire in Bologna, he attended a number of seminars on flute music interpretation and teaching. He then decided to take up the saxophone, too: he studied with Claude Delangle at the “Sax Master Class” and in 2002 he successfully graduated with Daniele Faziani. In the meanwhile he approached the jazz music, following improvisation courses with Ivan Valentini, Haddy Handerson and Tomaso Lama. In July 2004 he attended the specialization course of the Berklee Summer School directed by Larry Monroe, Giovanni Tommaso and Roger Brown at Umbria Jazz, winning its prestigious scholarship. He has performed with different ensembles, facing repertoires ranging from classical music to jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz and musicals, touring both in Italy and abroad. He has played in several recordings and worked with prominent musicians, in particular André De La Roche, Andrea Centazzo, Davide Masarati (soundtracks for Mediaset), Sandro Comini and the Oscar prize winner Nicola Piovani.

TIZIANO ZANOTTI - Bass, double bass, composition

After completing his classical studies, he attended several jazz and rock music master classes, becoming also a skilled guitar, piano and cello player. He studied with: Marc Johnson, Furio di Castri, Palle Danielsson, Bruno Tommaso, Pat Martino, Ubaldo Fioravanti, Trilok Gurtu, Gianluigi Trovesi, Peter Erskine, John Taylor, Giancarlo Gazzani. He has participated in a number of recording productions as a performer, arranger and artistic producer, playing with a number of outstanding musicians like Claudio Lolli, Nicola Piovani's Oracoeli Orchestra, Andrea Bocelli, Franz Campi, Josef Alessi, Andrea Giuffredi, Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti (to name just a few), and in several orchestras and jazz and rock bands. As a leader he has produced the following CDs: “Minimized” (CFM 1998), “Tarabuk” (Velut Luna 2006) and "Influences" (Echoes 2007), acclaimed by both the public and the specialized press. He is also a well-known music educator. He has taught at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Fondazione Arturo Toscanini in Parma and Idea in Bologna. In 1996 he founded the "Centro di Formazione Musicale" in Bologna, where he worked as director and teacher of bass and double bass, publishing a number of manuals and multimedia CDs translated into English and French. His latest instructional manual, “Bassista contemporaneo” (Echoes 2006), is now a sales success.

Breathtaking Passion
author: Dale Robinson
I am a music critic and soprano sax player. There isn't much out there featuring soprano--it is usually 'smooth' or 'antique' or 'free jazz'. The instrument has so many voices, one wonders why it does not have more aficionados. 'Influences' by Alessio Alberghini on soprano and Tiziano Zanotti on double bass is the finest, most tasteful and passionate playing I have yet heard. The duo forgoes traditional harmonic and rhythmic accompaniment, but it is not needed. Their unison playing, their counterpoint, their soul, their tones are as if the marriage of them is a unique instrument. The pieces are homage to bop, swing, new age, blues and classical. Rather stunning and virtuosic in every way, I recommend this CD without reservation. If I had to take a soprano sax album to a desert island, this would be it!
