Album Notes

Singer and songwriter Zeile August Dougher releases Orion’s Belt. Recorded by Jonathan Wyman and mastered by Adam Ayan in one week, ten songs made it on after four years of working in her home studio while raising her baby daughter and two step children. The bulk of the songs are reflective of this part of the journey. The vocals honeyed down and sparse. The arrangement salted and quiet. The bones glow through to the listener in a way that her earlier work fronting bands hoped to. She is accompanied by the insatiable groove of longtime bandmate and friend Fred Morin on the upright bass.

Great lyrics! This is my new favorite CD. I haven\'t taken it out of the CD player since I got it.

Hasn\'t left the CD player since we got it

Orion’s Belt hasn’t left our CD player since we got it. Or, well, barely: my two-year-old took it out to play some Dan Zanes, and about an hour later my five-year-old took out the Dan Zanes and put Orion’s Belt back in. Not to say it’s kid’s music, because it’s not, in fact, I’d say if there’s ever a CD that will inspire you to finally leave your bad relationship and move to California, this is it (assuming that’s the direction you were headed anyway). Every time I play it I catch some lyric I’ve missed before, and it all just blows me away. There’s so much in here that really speaks to me about living your life and being true to yourself and following your dreams. And also acknowledging mistakes. I think the reason we can’t stop listening to it is because it’s simultaneously background music and the sort of thing you’d listen to lying on your bed and doing nothing else but hearing the stories Zeile August has to tell. I can’t tell you my favorite song because it changes daily, but “Junebugs” and “Big Red Truck” I love love love (there’s a part of “Big Red Truck” I love so much that if I realize I missed it I’ll go back and rewind a bit to make sure I catch it). There are parts of this album that remind me of Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega, Nick Drake, or Joan Armatrading, but Zeile August’s voice, guitar, and lyrics are definitely her own. It’s mostly pretty mellow and stripped down, but I think that’s another reason it’s been our constant soundtrack since we’ve gotten it, because it’s not screaming in-your-face, notice-me music, but is more like having a good friend in the kitchen telling a good tale.
