Album Notes

the zimmermans were one of washington, d.c.'s hottest acts of the early-to-mid-nineties. fronted by the explosive vocals of lisa engelken, and featuring the songwriting and guitar talents of jonathan spottiswoode, the band made its CD debut in 1994 with CUT. recorded live in the studio, without overdubs, in one day, CUT is simultaneously raw and delicate, dark and celebratory. kurt weill-tinged postmodern rock and roll with a cinematic flair.

at the time of this recording, the zimmermans were:

lisa engelken.: vocals & accordion
jonathan spottiswoode: vocals & guitar
tim vaill: drums
tom watson: trumpet
john young: bass

the album also features special guest chris watling, of the grandsons, on saxophones and accordion.

the zimmermans broke up in late 1996. several band members went on to form spottiswoode & his enemies. lisa engelken moved to san francisco, where she has, among other things, won acclaim (and awards) for her performance in "hedwig and the angry inch."
