Album Notes

The Zobo Funn Band was a fabulously creative rock/jazz ensemble based in Ithaca, NY 1973-1980. Throngs of stoned and straight post-hippies, college students, professors and locals came to the ZFB's shows to "zobo dance" with wild abandon across the floors of local clubs and Cornell University's church-like Willard Straight Hall. The band also gigged in the NYC area, with a memorable show at Max's Kansas City. The 1977 studio LP "Zobo" didn't capture the energy of the band's transcendant live shows, which flew on the wings of principal songwriter Jeremy Werbin's eclectic tunes and extended solos from acknowledged avant-weird guitarist David Torn and saxophonist Jim Campagnola. This set from the Haunt nightclub in Ithaca was recorded on four tracks, mixed by ZFB bassist James Twomey, and remastered by Jim Watson. Certain to please fans of the band, the set provides a powerful glimpse into that all too obscure world where players really learn to play and songwriters are more concerned with saying something than selling something. Werbin struggled for recognition as a singer and songwriter until 1997, when he passed away from complications of diabetes. The surviving members of the band are all working musicians. Keyboardist David Arnay now lives in L.A., with two original jazz CDs available on CD Baby. Drummer Michael Wellen is still in Ithaca, playing with numerous bands. Campagnola and Twomey live in the NYC area. Torn has been advancing his film scoring career ("The Order") while producing and laying tracks for A-list clients including David Bowie and Jeff Beck. Fans of his eclectic sonic strategies may be surprised at the strength of his roots, in ample display on this disc, as a blazing blues-based guitar monster. Profits from sales of this CD will be donated to embryonic stem-cell and diabetes research.

Welcome to CU!

I arrived In Ithaca as a freshman in the "spring" of 1978. All I can remember is there'd been probably 3 feet of snow dropped over the previous couple days, so I had no idea what the campus actually looked like. I didn't know a soul, was wandering around that week-end, and found myself at the Straight. Walked smack dab into a Zobo show. Holy crap, I ain't ever seen anybody dance like THAT before! Talk about serendipity...

It wasn't a dream after all...

It was a magical time, a halcyon time when bands like Zobo and Urgence ruled the Earth. Fabled Ithaca in the Lagos de Dedos was the place to be, and we only needed 4 hours on motorcycle to make that late set at the Rongo or the Haunt. Zobo was a band that defined what cool music could be, a band that defied easy categorizations. They could make you dance and they could make you think. And they could make you drink, too! Good times! Yo, Cal James, you reading this??

Finally, a CD to replace my cassette

While at school in Buffalo in the 70's a friend turned me on to Zobo. We even saw them live at UB's radio station studio. If memory serves me, they got out of Dodge just before the mega-blizzard of '77 hit. I thought my decrepit Maxell tape of a Zobo gig was going to be my only record of this fine, fine band. I recently dropped my freshman daughter off at Cornell and I took the opportunity to check the local record stores. I was bummed out that no-one had ever heard of them. Then I decided to noodle around on the web and Eureka! CD Baby comes through. Thank you, keep them coming. My wife and I are enjoying the CD. When do we get one with The Girl She Loves to Dance and Icarus? Thanks Again.
