Album Notes

The first solo album by Paul Zollo, "ORANGE AVENUE is beautifully melodic, lyrical, provocative and compelling; Zollo sings like Cat Stevens, and writes songs that are a blend of Simon, Dylan, Talking Heads and Hoagy Carmichael." "Paul Zollo is one of the most serious and gifted songwriters writing today," wrote Andrew Farris of the L.A. Music Journal. He is famous for his interviews with songwriters (collected in the book SONGWRITERS ON SONGWRITING;EXPANDED EDITION) but as those in the know already know, he's a tremendous songwriter himself. Here's a chance to hear his own songs. Especially touching is his timeless duet with the great Art Garfunkel on "Being In This World." But there is so much -- the liquid excitement of "Watching Wanda Swim," the sensual mystery of "Human Sunlight," the nostalgic magic of "Just Like Myrna Loy," the rock and roll celebration of "Thanksgiving." This is a great album for all lovers of creative, inventive lyrics and wonderful melodies. "'ORANGE AVENUE' ... is a thoughtful cycle of lush melodies," wrote legendary author-journalist Rip Rense,"awash in acoustic guitars, saxophones, cellos and whimsy. There are tales and essays, musing and anthems, reflections and poignancy. Myrna Loy is on it (no kidding, at the beginning `Just Like Myrna Loy') and so are a lot of happy people in a bar in Tijuana (the live track 'Thanksgiving' a little rocker that would do Richard Thompson proud... Zollo is a guy who wanders around singing his heart out just because he was made that way."

I love This Album
author: Michelle Williams
Orange Avenue by Paul Zollo is a brilliant collection of songs. The lyrics tell a story and each song is an adventure. The lyrics are finely crafted and weave a tapestry of romance, intrigue, Passion, spirituality. The songs are multifaceted and haunting. The music stays with me and makes me want to hear it again. Paul Zollo puts his whole heart into every song and it is very evident that he is a born storyteller. His vocals are mesmerizing and I am entranced as his voice seeps into every fiber of my being. I am totally addicted to this CD. Paul is joined by music legend, Art Garfunkel for a duet on the song, “Being In This World” which is a touching song about life and doing the best we can with what we have. This duet is beautiful and the harmonies are perfectly blended for an unforgettable heart song. Paul Zollo also produced this album and the production quality is among the finest I have ever heard. There are some fun sound effects that really bring the songs to life! This album is a work of art with heart wrenching ballads and toe tapping tunes which are pure fun with horns added to jazz them up and make us want to dance. Orange Avenue is a gift from a songwriter who knows how to make us want more. This CD is a must have for any music lover and I highly recommend this CD for anyone who loves a good story. I give Orange Avenue by Paul Zollo five Stars!

"Being In This World" alone is worth the price of the CD. It's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. That Garfunkel would sing on it, i think, attests to its greatness, right in that Simon/Dylan pocket, which is where Zollo lives. Also wonderful here in "Arrows At The Moon," which is stunning, and "Thanksgiving" is both funny and a rocker. I love this guy. Can't wait for the next one.

Zollo rules. This is a beautiful album.

I love this album. Zollo is a great songwriter- his songs are funny and profound, which isn't easy to do. I love "Book Of Life" the best with its cool sitar -- and the musicians throughout are really great. The cut with Garfunkel is really beautiful -- and "Thanksgiving" TOTALLY rocks. "Discovering Gravity" is a song that all women should hear- i think he understands something about women in this song you don't get to hear much. I've heard him in clubs is l.a. and i can't wait for the next album too cause hes got some killer new songs too and his bands ROCKS. I love this. If you like good songs, i know you'll like this.
