Album Notes

Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment, as a band, has been an evolving / revolving incarnation, both in players and repetoire. Starting with traditional eastern european music, Zoyres rearranges it, then continues to evolve it through texture, improvisation, and exploration. The instruments on the cd include trombone, clarinet and bass clarinet, alto and bari sax, and drumset. The current lineup has added tuba to the mix for some fat low end, and incorporates some sampling and many guest musicians.
The name "Zoyres" derives from the Yiddish term for fermented vegetables "zoyers." These foods have been transformed by culture and community (of the microbial sort) through incredible biochemical fermentation processes. Zoyres' music represents the geo-social analogue to the biochemical ferment. Their music, of Eastern origin, brined in the contemporary cultural milieu, is akin to the pickle, still evident in its cucumbral origin, but with a taste and texture transformed.
