notes
"This is one of the most beautiful recordings of Armenian folk music I have ever heard. Passionate, playful, and deeply emotional, I found it haunting."
-Atom Egoyan, Award-winning Director, International Filmmaker, Writer, Producer
Zulal is an Armenian a cappella folk trio comprised of three women: Teni Apelian, Yeraz Markarian, and Anaïs Tekerian. Keeping to the folk tradition, Zulal writes its arrangements in an organic style, using the simplicity of voice to capture the heart of Armenia's rural music.
In three years, Zulal has developed a solid performance record including a coast-to-coast U.S. tour, performances at The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, and a unique performance with Cirque du Soleil. Nominations include "Best Folk/World Song" at the 2004 Annual Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards and "Best Folk/World Album" at the 2005 Annual Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards. Zulal received two awards in 2005: "Best Vocal Traditional" and "Best Newcomer" at the 2005 7th Annual Armenian Music Awards.
The vocal trio collaborated with producer J. Armen (Armen J. Meschian, www.jarmen.net) and painter/live-illustrator Kevork Mourad (www.kevorkmourad.com) in 2004 to create this enhanced CD, which includes: performance video, weblinks, English translations of songs, and 12 audio tracks.
Zulal is currently recording their second album. For more information and tour dates, visit www.zulal.org.
"Within two weeks of being added to the CD Baby database, which now stands at over 73,000 artists, this compelling vocal trio has already become a best-seller. Featuring their original a cappella arrangments of Armenian vocal folk music, Zulal, meaning "clarity," is most appropriately named as they are to be commended for their tight, on-point vocal harmony -- the brightness, precision and uncompromised musicality of their performances is evident from start to finish. Presenting songs that explore and convey the sounds of longing, celebration, struggle, desire and reverie, they pay tribute to their motherland's traditions while still bringing a renewed, inventive approach."

My Favorite CD !
author: HagopThe best Armenian music CD ever. Zulal captures what the Armenian Diasporan experience is about better than any movie, book, or painting. Zulal is good for your soul.
- author: A different look at a cappella music
The cd is great, only with a few intonation issues. The whole sound is lovely. Good first experience of Zulul. Speedy service (all the way to australia!)
I fell in love with the sound of Zulal at first hearing. I love their harmonies, and singing acapella makes the songs sound "uncluttered" and straight-forward. Although the harmonies may have a modern touch, the songs are stong and timeless.
Fantastic CD - my new favourite!
author: Kiwi TonyAs someone on the other side of the world looking for something interesting to tantalise my ears, I found exactly what I was looking for in Zulal's self-titled CD. Fantastic harmonies & exciting melodies - what more could one want? Can't wait for the next CD now!
Wow!
author: Armen AmirianI've never head another Armenian accapella group, so it is too easy to say they are the best. Saw them live twice and they were mesmerizing. The CD certainly does their live performances justice. Only wish they could produce more music. Even if you don't understand a single word of Armenian, the vocal harmonies alone are beautiful enough to hold you. Wow....
should be in every music collection!
author: TavThis is one of my several favorite CDs (perhaps my favorite) of all time!

Amazing voices and wonderful arrangements. I loved their songs the first time I heard them during 2004 Armenian Telethon. I recommend everyone to buy the CD and encourage young talents as Teni Apelian, Yeraz Markarian, and Anaïs Tekerian.

Wow!
author: Mark KrikorianI don't care for conventional renditions of Armenian folk music, but Zulal's reinterpretation is breathtaking and irrestistable. You don't even need to understand the words to be moved. Buy multiple copies and send them to your friends and relatives.

author: Jeanne PanossianWe love this Cd! We are using several of the songs at our wedding. It is very romantic, and the a capella style avoids many of the problems mediterreanian music usually has to overcome in the American ear. We are already holding our breath for the next recording!
I love this CD and am telling all my friends to buy it.
