notes
One rainy afternoon in NYC I was browsing in Klavierhaus, when I came across a rebuilt 1907 Pleyel piano. Though the Pleyel design had changed somewhat between Chopin's time and 1907, having read about the composer's fondness for the Pleyel piano, I was happy to have the unexpected opportunity to hear his music on the instrument. With the shop owner's permission, I sat down and played the A-flat Etude of Op. 25. The different registers of the piano formed delicate, transparent layers of sound which at once blended yet retained clarity as colors in watercolor paintings. The effect was so stunning that I had to try another piece by Chopin, then another. There I remained undisturbed by the shop owners and staff for over an hour, entering through this sound portal an era when music supplied not only the mood, but the plot, characters, and scenery as well; when people exchanged ideas during nightly soirées in intimate salons, where passing thoughts and mood changes were momentarily savored.
Later when my sister Hsi-Ling, a recording engineer and herself a brilliant pianist, heard the Pleyel, she shared the same excitement for the sound and suggested that we record it. I decided the complete Préludes of Chopin would uncover the wide range of color and moods of both the composer and his piano of choice. Chopin dedicated the Twenty-Four Préludes of Op. 28 to non other than Camille Pleyel, the piano maker and the composer's longtime friend.

The same experience!
author: Frank DeruyckI came across a Pleyel of 1907, and bought it immediatly! It is a fantastic instrument!
Chopin at its most intimate, revealing moments.
author: Gene PerciavalleMs Chang has won over a new follower. In a laymans opinion, she possesses an uncanny intimacy with Fredric himself. I can imagine him sitting nearby, nodding his head in approval for her rendering of his scoring, fingering and sensitivity. If all only Rubenstein could hear this mastery of the subject matter , what would he say?

a ravishing, cantabile sound that liberates all the haunted, fragile and febrile qualities of these intimate pieces

author: John EspositoHsia-Jung Chang brings a freedom and conviction to her playing of these Chopin preludes as she unleashes passionate expressivity through tonal and dynamic nuance so beautifully transported through to the Pleyel's open, rich, and loose sonority.

author: Sonoloco review - Ingvar Loco NordinHsia-Jung Chang’s CD is unique to me, not only in that it has brought me some peace of mind and some consolation in a time of heartbreak, but also because I can stack it on the shelf alongside Josef Hoffman and Ignaz Friedman with a conviction of it’s natural domiciliary rights up there!

Hsia-Jung Chang performs the works with great delicacy and refinement, allowing a wide spectrum of colour and moods to emerge in a way that appears effortless.
Finest interpretation of the Chopin Preludes that I've ever heard!
author: William O'ConnorPleyel piano has a liquid, luminous tonal quality, amber and sweet, like flowing honey. Allows this artist ability for recreating the work as the composer originally wished it to be heard, with all the nuances and tenderness that Chopin wanted expressed, subtly and distinctly. Artist is able to utilize this incredible instrument as Chopin had intended to portray hopes and aspirations of his very soul.
