notes

Count Charlotte Martin's keyboard driven Test-Drive Songs as a set of passionate, emotionally open songs that don't skimp on the hooks.

Martin's approach encompasses the orchestrated ruminations of Kate Bush, the poetic storytelling of Joni Mitchell, and the melancholy melodies of The Cure.

For Charlotte Martin, the most important thing is making a connection.

"Every single part of me is a piece of somebody else," says the piano-playing chanteuse. From connecting her life's tales with her powerful lyrics, to her fans that see themselves in her songs, Martin is an extraordinary kind of songwriter that builds close ties with anyone who hears her music.

Evoking influences as diverse as Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, early Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell - but still very much her own musician - Martin's music is a telling snapshot of her life.

A not-so-closet Goth with bleach-blonde hair, Martin has a knack for crafting emotionally-complex songs that continually flirt with pop structures. While her beautiful voice and piano-playing prowess offer an entrée into her music, it's Martin's uncompromising lyrics that keep you coming back.

Martin grew up in a small college town and dedicated most of her time to studying opera. She took piano lessons and eventually went to Eastern Illinois University, where her father is a music professor. That's when it all changed.

Martin moved in with a very-Goth roomie Raven (they're still best friends today) and went through several life-changing experiences. Beyond the normal college-age drama and relationship trials, Martin had two friends commit suicide in the same year. One was her then boyfriend's sister, who was also her best friend. The first song Martin wrote was for her funeral.

"I didn't really live until I got to college," she says. "I had all of this stuff happen and found out that I had a lot to express."

Martin continued expressing herself and moved to Los Angeles to begin her career. However, it didn't go as planned. "I thought that I'd just move to LA, get signed and that would be it," she says. Martin did get a deal and recorded an album, ONE GIRL ARMY, with producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters) for Bong Load/RCA. Showcasing Martin's talents for tackling big issues without hesitation, ONE GIRL ARMY touched on the personal topics of anorexia ("Something Like a Hero"), stalking from the stalker's perspective ("I'm Normal, Please Date Me") and risqué examinations of the battle of the sexes ("Take It Like a Man"). Sadly, it never came out.

"I was naive when I first got signed and felt like I needed a lot of people to help me. But now I know that I can just make music and put it out on my own. If you want to help, great. If you don't, great. The people will decide. You've got to take control and do it yourself."

Now she stands stronger than ever before - both artistically and professionally.

"I have my own studio and have learned how to become my own producer," she says. Martin's most recent tracks were overseen by a combination of producers, but many of the songs were produced by Martin.

"Producing my own music changes the way I approach songwriting. I can do more and go other places," says Martin who has expanded her sound with drum machines and more keyboards.

Time has also allowed her to fine-tune her delivery. "My writing has become more direct. The structure of my songs is way different from ONE GIRL ARMY, which was very artistic and very quirky," she says. "Now I'm learning how to get right to the point with my songs."

Martin's openness comes through in other ways than just her recorded music. A comic book junkie, Martin and friends have developed their own online comic for her website, titled "766 6th Street," after where she lived in college. It gives viewers a glimpse into her room - literally - and what's going on in her head.

"It's that whole thing where if you make fun of yourself, nobody can make fun of you," says Martin, who always keeps a bright sense of humor. "That's why the comic exists. It's just an opportunity to make fun of myself in the most awesome way."

During her live shows, Martin also gives all. She attacks the keyboard, allowing her charismatic personality to take over the room with the same intensity as the topics she's covering. Martin uses her shows to further connect with her fans, keeping the evening conversational and often baring gifts for the audience. It's no wonder her shows have grown to become constant sellouts.

"I give away presents at my shows because I want people to keep coming back," she jokes. "I don't know why, I just feel the need to give people presents. I think sometimes I freak out on my own fans."

Martin recently sang the song "Bring On the Day" for the SWEET HOME ALABAMA soundtrack and is working on her full-length debut. Until its release, Martin will continue connecting with her fans - through her website, her live shows and her open personality, but mainly through her music. They're sure to follow.

"Some artists have changed my life. In the humblest way, I really hope I can do that for somebody some day," Martin says. "I want to give my fans something special."

Very nice little cd. Track 4 rocks! If you like Rachael Yamagata or Lily Holbrook, you'll like Martin. :D

  • Excellent!
    author: Musashi

This cd has been in my cd player since I got it. It's an excellent album, really reminds me of early Little Earthquakes era Tori Amos. 2 thumbs up.

  • If you have any doubts about this CD...don't!! It's a journey worth taking.
    author: Katherine

Her voice and lyrics will transport you into alternate dreamlike universe! Loves it!

  • Simply Brilliant
    author: Cindy

I bought this album because I had her main album, On Your Shore. This album is exceptional. It has very refreshing and raw element about its, something a lot of commercial albums nowadays lack. Cheers to Charlotte.

  • Articulated Vocals and Precise Piano
    author: Ashkah

I would give this a 5 but the extremely polished feel of this takes away from emotions for me. Still, it is beautifully performed and written and well worth the price.

  • If you like Tori you will like Charlotte....
    author: David E

She is an amazingly warm and gifted performer on record and as a live performer. Buy this record. In fact, buy her whole catalog. You will not be disappointed!! And definitely see her live when you can!!

  • Awesome CD-Highly Recommended!
    author: Lynne

Awesome work, Charlotte! I hope a new full length CD will be forthcoming in the near future. I'll be the first in line to get it!

  • Love it!
    author: TCC

This is a really rich sounding CD and a great introduction to Charlotte's work. Hard to believe she did it all with just her voice, a keyboard, a drummer and a bassist.

  • Great Preview of what Charlotte is capable of
    author: Nils

The "test-drive songs" are a nice item for anybody who is interested in Charlotte Martin. It has some very strong songs (like "Something like a Hero") and shows off Charlotte's amazing voice, her piano skills and her considerably talent in songwriting. But all in all is the material not as strong or as mature as her full-length debut "on you shore".

  • Simply Effing Amazing!
    author: Jeff

Doesn't get much better than Charlotte when it comes to paino based pop/alternative. I love this cd, along with her other releases. Pretty thing is so damned good! My fave CM songs are Pretty Thing, Haunted, In Parentheses (amazing!), On Your Shore, Limits Of Our Love and Your Armor. there isn't a bad CM song...you need this and her other releases - stop reading this now and hit the 'buy' button!!

  • Amazing
    author: Harrison

This CD is amazing. Her writing is raw, her voice is great and being shaped to what it is on the ON THE SHORE disk. It showcases Charlotte's earlier work and makes you yearn that ONE GIRL ARMY was somewhere to be bought. This is a rare artist that doesn't come around often. Get this CD and run to your local music store to pick up her lastest work too.

  • Great!
    author: Sonia

Even though Char says these songs are just demos, they sound like absolutely great final versions, worthy of featuring in a full-length album. I'm only sorry she doesn't seem to play them live more often.

  • I LOVE IT!
    author: Maqui

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! Great album! amazing songs....

  • Simply Amazing.
    author: Kate

I added this to my cart on a whim before checkout - I liked what I'd heard of her latest album, etc. It is so much better than I thought it would be. It is so intense and personal and beautiful and strong and just remarkable. It's been living in my CD player since, and it is one of the few albums I've placed on my iPod in its entirety. Highly recommended.

  • WOW !
    author: Jeroen Denissen

This CD is just so unbelievably good ! What a voice and the songs are so well written. Tori watch out because this girl is just as good as you and sometimes even better ! BUY !

  • Amazing, Haunting voice and lyrics!
    author: Katie

A friend kept badgering me "You have to listen to this" and I'd say yeah yeah.... until she gave me a cd. WOW! This album and "On Your Shore" have been in my car stereo almost non-stop since I got them! That's high praise for me, I usually only have Tori in there! While there are a few similarities, it is definitely clear that Charlotte is her own person with her own voice and no copy cat - the genuine emotion behind her music cannot be faked! Can't wait to see where Charlotte's future takes her!

  • Inspiring lyrics, haunting piano, and gorgeous vocals
    author: Kelsey Smith

I love Charlotte Martin and Test Drive Songs. Her new cd is better, but this is amazing as well. The lyrics are beautiful and the mixture of piano, percussion, and occasional techno beats is refreshing.

  • Warm, intimate, introspective view into the Charlotte sanctuary
    author: Larry Hovorka

Very organic, confessional album by CM. Feels like you're sitting in Char's living room while the music is being created just for you. "Talk to Strangers" plays like a minimalistic adult nursery rhyme - soothing and ethereal. "The Girl I left behind" with it's drum n bass line ebbs out a tribal adolescence. Track #5 "Many Rivers" seems suited and crafted for tall, empty chapels filled with angels. "Last day on earth" sounds like a fitting farewell song to a movie or life yet to be scripted, a liberation. Finally, "Raven", encased beautifully around by two interludes is the most uneasy song that yearns for triumph in the end and is delivered astutely - "This is not the end, it's only the beginning... see you soon." This disc hums and glistens as it spins it's roots and blossoms throught the speakers...

  • I haven't felt this way since Tori Amos debuted.
    author: AudioJoad

I haven't felt this way since Tori Amos debuted. She is the true complete package. Great song's. She does it all...lyrics, music and sing from the heart. She's one moment powerful and then she reaches deep into her soul to tug at your heart. I, for one, can't wait to hear her next cd. I highly recommend Test Drive Songs to anyone and everyone. Thank You Charlotte for saving music for me.

  • Wonderful CD.
    author: Cory

What a wonderful voice...reminiscent of Tori Amos. Now one of the favourites in my collection!!!!

  • Fabulous!
    author: Whitney

Everyone needs this CD in their collection.... Charlotte Martin plays the piano like a badass and has an awesome voice. And if you like this, you MUST see her live!

  • Just amazing voice, music, and lyrics
    author: friedbrownball

I actually like this CD more than her recent big market release - some of the same songs are here, but with less production, which lets her voice really run free. Have listened several times already - always something new to pick up.

  • A voice as beautiful as the lady herself!
    author: Robert Groden

What a great CD. I only wish there were a DVD video to go along with it. Charlotte can't do anything wrong. A flawless talent destined for absolute greatness. Beautifully recorded. I bought three copies.

  • I love this CD!
    author: Charlie

This music is simply beautiful. I love every single song on this CD. Charlotte's voice goes directly to the heart and leaves you goosebumped for hours after listening to her songs. And the piano is just perfect. I know this sounds a bit too enthusiastic but if you love good singer/songwriters, than you surely don't wanna miss Charlotte.

  • The perfect blend of voice, piano, and passion.
    author: Stephanie Chizek

I got this CD after listening to a few clips on Charlotte's website and I'm just blown away. She's a new artist to me but has quickly raced her way up to my top ten list (up there with Tori and Ani). This CD is a great complication of songs to get you hooked. It has variety and depth and I can't wait to hear more from Charlotte Martin!

  • Definitely Worth a Listen
    author: Amy L.

Though I do love most of the lyrics and the arrangements, it does seem a little contrived and forced at times. Not only are some of the lyrics cliche, they're not as "honest" as they could be. Her voice is impecable, but I would hope to hear some more range in the future. Charlotte has some great talent, though, and I look forward to hearing more and watching her grow.

  • so beautiful, so unique
    author: Justin

No one could have ever told me that such an amazing person such as Charlotte existed, but after seeing her for the first time performing with Howie Day last fall, my eyes have once again proven me wrong. There is no one on the music scene(or the face of the earth for that matter) quite like her. If you want to compare her to all the more popular female artists, for example- Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, or even as new as Norah Jones...feel free to do so. But to ever quite put your finger on the sound and amazing talent of Charlotte Martin would be almost as hard as defining a brand new style of music! Not only does her voice send you streaming through your most peaceful and harmonious dreams, it also touches close to home to anyone dealing with the same issues that she speaks about. Even though I am a male, and very much into more of the rock sound, I still pop her music in my CD player everytime i need a good pick-me-up and a calming and relaxing evening with some friends. Do me, and the rest of the world a favor? Buy this album, along with her other EP-"In Perenthesis". You will NOT be disappointed!

  • In awe
    author: Michelle

I was highly impressed with the CD's overall mood. Charlotte is definitely dually talented, as this album showcases her wide & strong vocal range & her seemingly effortless piano ballads. She is my new favorite artist & this CD will go with me everywhere!

  • Awesome
    author: Elijah Saint

Hello Charlotte I am digging your music. I know that I'll be seeing you soon on the Grammys. Keep on writting those beautiful songs. You have a great voice and you definately have the pop image.

  • great!
    author: giorgio

Really great. It's a pleasure listening her voice and piano. I heard about her in a site of Kate Bush but i find her music more similar to Tori Amos. Unfortunately such artists are known less than others, especially here in my country, Italy. Sorry for my english...

  • Fantastic!
    author: Kelvin Milgate

This is a truly great album. I listened to the first few seconds of one of the songs on cdbaby.com and could tell that it was worth a buy. Since I've had it, it hasn't been out of my CD player. I buy a lot of music over the course of a year and this certainly ranks as one of the best this year!

  • Tested it and it was well worth the drive
    author: SI

I listened to the samples and agree you got something going on. People compare you to other pop singers and I agree you're similar, but if you were to make it big there is a spot for you still. You have the passion and voice, don't blow it. Overall good. Visit me at www.cdbaby.com/si2 . Peace....SI

  • Future star
    author: Peter Borza

A great opportunity to get some material from a future (super?) star. Charlotte is releasing her debut album (on a major label) august 10th -04 called On your shore. I´m convinced she´ll be a big star and this cd is great listening.

  • beautiful
    author: Gion

beautiful EP. limitless voice, and interesting lyrics. Cant wait to hear the full album she is working on, -Gion

  • This is Music
    author: St. James

I was introduced to Charlotte's music by my neighbor in Los Angeles whose brother happened to just wrap filming in Charlotte's video. Her music is artistry at its best. I absolutely love it!

  • author: CD Baby

With the unrestrained passion of Tori Amos, the delicacy of Kate Bush and snap of Fiona Apple, this is piano pop for the die-hard connoisseur. Coloring musical landscapes with swirling, tumbling melodies, pointed lyrics and warm and buzzy vocals, this woman both soars and sears. Kick back and fling open the door to your heart where this woman takes up residence.

  • amazing artist on the verge to becoming an icon
    author: Geralynn

This is probably one of the best purchases I've ever bought. Not only was it amazing to hear Charlotte's work, but it also captured moments and I cannot help but constnatly listen to it in my car. CD baby was very gracious, and it was also a great buy I had no problems whatsoever.

  • author: Betsi

    Char is simply amazing.

  • beautifully understated
    author: Rebote

The understated production on this CD is a perfect complement to Charlotte Martin's smart lyrics, infectious melodies, and crystal-clear voice. Thanks to CDBaby for making this CD available at a reasonable price--get it while you can!!!

  • The new Tori Amos! The best album ever!
    author: Karen Langefeld

Having been a huge fan of Tori for years, I thought nothing could compare. But Charlotte has blown her out of the water. The woman has strong, passionate vocals, excellent piano playing, and more importantly, her songwriting is one of the best I've ever heard. Her songs have such depth and passion, yet seem playful at the same time. I LOVE THIS WOMAN! She has become my favorite artist. You cannot go wrong with this cd. BUY IT NOW!

  • Beautiful, honest, and to the heart.
author: Tina (Something Like a Website)

Charlotte Martin is an amazing singer/songwriter, rising above the comparisons to other piano chanteuses such as Tori Amos. Her lyrics are her own, her music is her own, yet she makes them open and heartfelt enough for everyone to relate. Excellent work.

  • wow!
    author: hippie83

Great cd, great lyrics, great music..If you havent seen charlotte in concert, you are missing out!!! great cd, but even better in person!! what an amazing voice!

  • Excellent CD by an incredible talent!!!!
    author: grokLF (vince singleton)

I bought this one because I loved the samples at cdbaby, and I just fell in love with the CD. Great lyrics, great voice, great piano: one of the best new artists and CDs I've heard in some time. And she is SO beautiful!

  • Very talented songwriter!
    author: Amanda P.

This cd was great! I love to listen to her words and relate them to me and my same similarities in life. I think it's awesome to hear her sassy, elegant voice say swear words! Do it more, Charlotte!!

  • Good/Bad
    author: William

The C.D. was great. Although you can tell it was earlier work, it still maintained all my expectations. The only problem found was that the artist web-site said the C.D. was signed and number, but mine was not.

  • author: Megan

I thought this cd was a great one! Charlotte Martin sounds like a cross between Tori Amos and Jewel, but at the same time, she manages to sound very unique. The only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that "I'm Normal, Please Date Me" wasn't on the cd. I thought the songs were brilliant and that the soul-searing lyrics were wonderful.

  • Soulful and life changing (For me at least)
    author: Joshua Cambron

Stylish and very well put together, with insight and even a quirky almost playful way of saying that she knows how to touch you, and she will. I am a fellow songwriter for a emo band and I strive for lyrics like this.

  • very good music
    author: James P.

Charlotte sounds very much like Tori Amos, but, trust me, it's a VERY good thing. That's what sucked ME in. Charlotte writes really good songs and her voice is very soothing. On a side note, if you enjoy Char's style, you should definitely check out Marina V. Her CDs are also available on cdbaby.com!!

  • A staggering early release, and a wonderful introduction!
    author: Rich Spencer

I'm predominently a fan of jazz (mainly bop and freeform), and Charlotte's music appeals to me mainly on the basis of her artistic accomplishment with this generous EP. The stand out tracks for me include "Lightblinde," "Last Day on Earth" and the joyously serpentine "Raven (noodle mix)."

  • Incredible and Insightful!
    author: Tina

A great listen. You acutally feel like you are living her stories with her. It is great when an artist makes you feel as if he/she is writing the song just for you!

  • Wonderful! Sonic heaven!
    author: Mike Sikorsky

The sonic framework commands your attention (as if her eyes didn't!). Then, the perfect escape from blissful sonic heaven is focusing on her excellent lyrics. This entire musical creation is fabulous!

  • Charlotte Martin Rocks My World
    author: Katie

This CD is wonderful and amazing. Martin clearly writes from her heart and expresses herself to a flawless degree. This has become my new favorite CD; I listen to it all the time! Charlotte Martin rocks my world :)

  • excellent!
    author: kathi

this cd is simply put, brilliant. its vibrant with an energy all charlottes own. i can't wait for more charlotte cds to come out!

  • Incredible!
    author: Lisa M. Lombardo, VTeens.Org

Charlotte is simply amazing. After my first listen to her latest EP, I was hooked. Once, I learned of the 'Test-Drive' release - there was no question that a copy was needed. I have listened and CHARLOTTE DOES IT AGAIN. Her independent release is incredible! This album is a MUST HAVE for music lovers of all genres.

  • AMAZING TALENT...look out everyone!
    author: Holly

Charlotte Martin has been in my cd player for over a month now and what can i say except WOW! her songwriting is so creative, her voice is just unbelievable and her production is cutting edge (and she produced it herself!) You won't be disappointed with Test-Drive Songs. While some of the comparisons to Kate Bush and Tori Amos are true, she definately is carving out her own style, sound, and voice as an artist. I expect nothing but great things from her and her career.

  • very good....but
    author: erick

This disc is just great. The songs are well-crafted and even better produced; especially the first track. However, the similarities in her singing and playing style to Tori Amos are overwhelmingly evident and a tad bit dissapointing, as numerous people who overheard it asked if that was in fact Tori Amos. Nevertheless, Charlotte Martin is extremely talented and i look forward to her full-length debut.

  • gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous!
    author: kathi

charlotte is, in a word, amazing. this ep is what made me love charlotte + her music, so what else is there to say but then BUY IT? my favorite song off this ep is 'pretty thing' its filled with spunk and loads of good things. definately worth a purchase!

  • Beautiful!
    author: erin, california

I'm so pleased to have come upon Charlotte Martin. She's a talent and everyone should give her a listen. She's got such a beautiful yet haunting voice and the keyboard backs her up perfectly.

  • I can’t get this CD out of my hi-fi; It’s some new kind of super catchy glue!
    author: Peter, Leicester UK

Martin's vocal style is very reminiscent of Kate Bush, but the music behind the voice takes a few surprising and enjoyable turns. The Girl I Left Behind and Last Day On Earth make me think that perhaps Ken Andrews’ synth-pop influence has been greater than just mixing the first track? If you're still unsure having heard the audio clips hear, then go check-out her website for MP3's, but don’t forget to BUY THE CD! I can’t wait for the follow-up to the “Test-Drive”.

  • Must-have CD!

GREAT cd, just love it, I recommend it to everyone who reads this to buy it, very good CD of a very talented young lady who is definitely going to make it! Good luck! Britt.

  • Awesome CD Charlotte
    author: Justin Easter

Nice to see a fellow Charleston Native make it big. You are a very talented musician.

  • great preview
    author: Joanne Elizabeth

After hearing this CD, I'm sure that buying her forthcoming album is the right thing to do. My favorite is still "Girl I Left Behind". I hope to hear that one on the radio. If you like Tori Amos, you might like her because she sings and plays piano. But she doesn't sound like Tori; she sounds like Charlotte. As it should be.

  • This Girl is Going Places
    author: Kat

Charlotte Martin simply has talent. In this album she has struck just the right balance between originality and marketability, and still her own voice speaks very clearly through it all. One cannot help but be very interested to see where she goes from this nothing less than impressive beginning.

  • Stunning, warm and gorgeous sounds
    author: Steve

I was recommended this CD by no less than 3 seperate people within the last few months so had to hear what all the fuss was about. Every track here has a warm sumptuous feel without being over-produced. The minimal stripped down sound of Many Rivers compliments Charlotte's emotional voice, while the more poppy sounds on Pretty Thing and Something Like A Hero create an uplifting feel but with dark and serious lyrics. Thoughtful and intelligent music that talks about real life and real hurt but without leaving you feeling depressed. I have now bought her next EP , and cannot wait to hear more!

  • Charlotte deserves bucketloads of success.....
    author: Natalie Cox

I first heard of Charlotte Martin from the Women That Rock Magazine. When you look at Charlotte's face she pulls you in with her beautiful eyes. As I listen to her the words that come to mind are 'clean' and 'flowing'. The strong piano sound carries you like a lovely mattress and Charlotte's voice kisses your ears softly. I look forward to the day that I see Charlotte play live in London,UK or that I get to see her in the States... On this CD, Test-drive Songs, my favourite song is 'Many Rivers', the words are beautiful. This CD will be well worth your money.

  • Must-have CD
    author: J.R. Swantz

I had downloaded some tracks off this CD from Charlotte's web site a few months ago. Over and over I played them until I just had to get the CD. I was afraid I was going to be disappointed because I had set such high standards for it. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is a brilliant piece of work and Charlotte is a brilliant song writer... brilliant musician... brilliant producer... brilliant singer... the list goes on. Get this CD now and be proud to be on the band-wagon before it truly gets rolling; because some day, Charlotte Martin is going to be big.

  • Superb!!!
    author: Kim

With a powerful voice, amazing talent, and inspirational writing, Charlotte Martin delivers superb music that has been missing from today's artists. The CD is the best I've heard in a long time and her mix of pop-rock with piano is absolutely amazing! Way to go girl!

    author: Tim Wilkenson

What a great CD ! This artist will surely earn a grammy (or two) one day. She has considerable talent and this album showcases it beautifully. Charlotte is very much like Tori Amos was when SHE was earning her "wings". I highly recomend this album and predict "Test-Drive Songs" will be a collectors item when Miss Martin is recognized by mainstream record companies and the public at large.

  • Great pianobased singer songwriter album!
    author: Pär Winberg

Imagine a young and fresh Kate Bush mixed with Tori Amos but all done with a modern sounding edge. Like if Tori was produced by Anthony J Resta (Collective Soul etc) – well you’ll get the grip... And she’s produced it all by her self. Gehh... Are there talented people around the globe or what! It all starts out with a superb track called “Pretty Thing” – a song that feels like the missing link between Kate Bush and Avril Lavigne. Well second out “Talk To Strangers” with a drumbeat, piano, keyboards and her solid voice is magnificent and the whole album is just filled with this cool unique way of being. If you adore pianobased singer songwriter and if you’re not afraid of a modern vibe you have to get a copy of this album. And we sure have something to look forward to, when her major album will be released later on this year. And then I haven’t mentioned fifth out “Many Rivers”… It’s such a beautiful tune… Get a copy today.

  • Pretty Passionate Thing
    author: Alice Marie

"Pretty Thing" is a hit. Charlotte is definitely one to watch -- and hear.

  • Great voice, great lyrics
    author: Brandon Shea

A highly impressive set of songs. Wonderful lyrics and composition with an edge.

  • Tori Amos-Like
    author: Kim Clarke

This girl sounds just like Tori Amos. Great style and wonderful lyrics. A talent that will go far. See you at the grammys

  • Not enough words to describe this - just buy it!
    author: Ariana

This is one of my favourite cds, and I own over 300! It might only be 8 tracks long but those tracks are amazing, both musically and lyrically. Not only can Char belt out a tune, but her piano playing is superb as well, and on this EP you can really see how she puts her talent to good use. If you like engaging, thought-provoking music and are fond of female vocalists/piano based songs, then buy this cd! I very much doubt you'll regret it. Check out her website too, her first EP is another that's definitely worth investing in. :)

  • Charlotte Martin Is the next best thing
    author: psylockf

Charlotte Martin is super talented , her voice is amazing, while having some resemblance to tori amos, she soon shows why she's not just another tori wannabe, her brilliance shins all over this demo cd, not a weak moment, great productions and lyrics, way to go girl :)

  • Been searching for something refreshing? This goes beyond amazing
    author: Adèle

If you ever need to listen to someone with a beautiful, expressive skillful voice, the point of madness at her fingertips as she plays the piano and songwriting filled with dark humour and honesty Charlotte will deliver this and more right where it counts. Whether you study music or are just searching for something more this will astonish you... you will be hooked. And why not? She has something to say as she rocks out on the keys never afraid to use the synths and layered vocals that add to the depth of it all. This CD can take you places, definately an EP everyone should experience.

  • Wonderful Piano Folk Rock
    author: Todd

Wonderful album, great piano playing. Rock/pop/folk. Charlotte's voice sounds wonderful, and I can hear touches of Kate Bush on a few of the songs. "Pretty Thing" gets stuck in your head fast. Buy this album.

    author: Maya

Being a Tori Amos fan for years, I've always loved piano players in general. I heard about Charlotte word of mouth and visited her webiste. After hearing some snippets there, I decided the CD was a must have. She has such great charisma as well as lyrics that make you think and dream. Since I've gotten the cd i've been telling all my friends about it :) I can't wait for her next one!

    author: Ashleigh Walker, New Orleans

this cd is amazing. charlotte's voice, her piano style, her words- nothing short of amazing.

  • author: Scott Brewster

Charlotte is wonderful! I believe she's bound for stardom! So original! Certainly, a comparison to Tori Amos is obvious; but, that is a good thing!

  • Excellent CD
    author: Gary

An excellent CD. Haunting voice in a kind of folk rock style, yes it does sound like some stuff I have heard before ie Alanis or Tori or maybe a bit of Kate but that is no bad thing. Not only is the music great but the production is a pleasure with an open sound stage and bags of clarity.

  • Exceptional talent!
    author: Celeste

This is one of my favorite new CD's...I think she is comparable to early Tori Amos as well. I can't stop listening to "The Girl I Left Behind." It's always the first song I play for others, too...I have little doubt that when Charlotte's full-length album comes out, people will be asking me, "Isn't that girl on the radio the one you were listening to nonstop a year ago?" She's gonna break, BIG.

  • GREAT!

    Beautiful singing and songwriting. Lovely.

  • Don't read about it, buy it !
    author: Bish

This EP is a perfect addition to any music lovers collection and it’s easy to see why Charlotte has been signed up by RCA after hearing the quality of songs on offer here. The opening track “Pretty Thing” is just one of the great songs to grace this disc and I’m truly glad that I purchased this CD. If I had to find any fault at all, it would be with the actual packaging of the EP (front cover being the exception). It’s a little sparse with no back cover and the lack of printed lyrics is a shame, although some are available via her website. This very minor problem apart I can highly recommended this CD and Charlotte is an artist well worth keeping a eye on in the future.

  • nothing short of amazing!
    author: Sarah

This EP is so wonderful...I've barely taken it out of my cd player since I got it. This is what music is all about. It's thoughtful, passionate, and rockin'! Can't wait to hear the full-length debut from RCA!

  • Great songs, Great potential.
    author: Andy Ashton

Whilst the Kate Bush/Tori Amos comparisions are vaild, there is far more to Charlotte Martin. Her melodies are more challenging and there is an overall air of sophistication present, making the listener imediately want to hit the replay button. This is a value-for-money mini album which acts as a taster for her debut album - I would defy anyone with a likening for classy female vocals, complex song structures and intelligent lyrics (pity they're not reproduced though) to listen this and not want to own it. Magnificent.

  • Hard To Fault
    author: Mike Gray

While there is some overlap between this and her debut EP, it's hard to quibble when the songs here are so good. The Kate Bush influenced Everytime It Rains stands out, as does the amazing piano intro to the first track. Charlotte is clearly one to watch for the future.

  • This girl is the Next Big Thing!!!!!
    author: Corinne

I have been a Charlotte Martin fan since her last CD, and this one proves that her talent keeps on growing! She hooks you in with her distinctive, haunting piano in a way that few musicians other than Tori Amos do. This CD is sure to please anyone who likes sophisticated lyrics, rich melodies, great piano playing, and a gorgeous soprano voice. The only thing I want to know... when is she coming to the East Coast so I can finally hear her play live!!!

  • Worth the Money, Totally Awesome CD!
    author: Greg

Charlotte Martin is a totally great singer and songwriter, and this new EP just proves it. All eight of the tracks are breathtaking and energetic, yet each song has its own personality. I bought this the day it came out, got it like 3 days later, and have listened to it at least one every day since then. It is hard to decide which song is best. Her "references" and incidental comaprisons to Kate Bush and Robert Smith (of the Cure) just make this album even better! Go buy the CD. You will not be disappointed, ever!

  • Absolutely amazing CD!
    author: Denise

Wow. I'm so glad I heard about this CD because it's definitely worth it to get. Each song is incredible down to the smallest detail. Vocals, lyrics, music, and everything else. Charlotte definitely has a huge future ahead of her, no doubt about it!
