notes
ConGa Punks are an incredible Power Station equipped with various songwriters, composers, arrangers, vocalists, and multifaceted instrumentalists...In the distance, you hear their approach, both infectious and habitual. The beats mixed nicely with all sorts of sound. Sometimes-occasional wailing vocals blending in with some sparkling guitar work.
This band is going somewhere and going there fast. If this release is any indication of their musical intent, the ConGa PunKs are sure to stimulate all five senses and Seven Continents. Here they span all sides of that so-called crossover. This collection will make you remember how good music can be, but before you attempt to categorize their sound, they will make you want to hit a dance floor unsure of what to do next. You will find yourself in the possession of a beautiful keyboard driven vamp that lets you wind up and back down again. The most unusual thing about this work is that it is so complete. It gels together in a way you would expect the most professional of albums to.

An inspired musical document!
author: John TremloAn inspired musical document that is monstrous all the way through, this bountiful harvest of songs is ace. ConGa PunKs draw a captivating musical picture with a mixture of alternative, latin, rock, jazz and dance beats that are painted on a canvas of melodic pop that easily catches the ears. This collection will make you remember how good music can be, but before you attempt to categorize their sound, they will make you want to hit a dance floor unsure of what to do next.
yo conga punks
author: johnny from myspace.comi just have to say that you guys are really good, i totaly dig the sound that you guys are putting out. you guys have the cool latin jazz, salsa flare with a new age style. i myself grew up listening to all the 1950s-1960s latin jazz, and salsa music, and also play music, but its cool to know that this style is alive. keep up the righteous jammin, and i wish you guys the best!
1=bad 5=AWESOME!

Truly Defiant!
author: Joe Famous ProjectI listen to this CD almost everyday! It fits in my collection between Los Lobos and Ozomatli. If you love real defiant music you'll love this!!!
This CD is exaclty what I expected
author: LaylowThis CD really lives up to it's title. The mix of genres really works well on this album and pulls you in. This group looks to be very promising and I hope the CD gets the recognition it deserves.
This is very tight and exciting throughout!
author: Taxi Custom Critique www.taxi.comThis is very tight and exciting throughout! The arrangements/orchestrations also provide some exciting thrills. We really liked the Latin feel on this work. We treated this album as if you were hearing it coming off a stage in a live setting. This will lend the perspective needed as far as panorama and volume are concerned. It also provided more excitement overall. We loved this music. From a scale of 1 to 10 they get an 8 overall rating as far as music, lyrics, marketability, arrangement, production and engineering. This is just our opinion, albeit an informed one. There are many informed opinions on any given work. So, pro or con, don't let it change your life!
Conga Punks make you never forget!
author: Wonderful-people.comMusic-an expression of joy, sorrow, desire, solidarity, community, humanity...or even of just any thought that comes to mind...Without thinking about it, Music's Genre Defiance will take you into this magic universe of love, hate and adventure of true spirits and imagination. This work takes us through all it's expressions, whether we are talking about jazz, blues, ambient, alternative rock, country or religious & devotional, and is the only thing that purifies us. If you want to challenge your destiny, relax and remember the voice and come along with Conga Punks.
I love artists that say screw it!
author: Jennifer Mills _ California IndependentI love artists that say screw it; let’s go out on a limb. That’s ConGa PunKs, a mult-instrumentalist by the name of Cougar Estrada, who put together this album with a host of special guests. ConGa PunKs draw a captivating musical picture with a mixture of alternative, latin, rock, jazz and dance beats that are painted on a canvas of melodic pop that easily catches the ears. This is definitely an album you should check out if you are a fan of any of the above mentioned genres or are just curious to hear something a bit left of center.
For your ears only!
author: Tiffany B _ Toronto Canada"Powerful, groovy and progressive. Hits you at times like a speeding bullet. Low and melodic to hard heavy and funky. I recommend you pick up Music's Genre Defiance. It's nourishment for the ears and the soul."
I can't even classify this!
author: Mach The Noisebox Cleveland. OH"When I first put Conga Punks' CD in my player, the wall of sound nearly blew my chair backwards about 5 and a half feet. Never before have I heard such a thick, intense, urban, primal sound. I can't even classify it as a Rock sound, because it's on an entirely different plane of existence. This group's got everthing you could ever want: melody, crunchy riffs, and catchy beats. This CD proves that they have the potential to outshine nearly every noise-ridden recording to date. Be sure to at least check this one OUT!"
Truly Superb!
author: Stephanie Stevens East Coast Romper Fair Haven, MA"The newest band to make me sit up and take notice...they have something to say and are not going to stop until they have the world's attention. Blistering and chaotic...into slow and mellow...truly superb"
"Guajira" has been stuck in my head for days...
author: DatgrrlTotally different sound, very catchy tunes and experimental stuff. Hats off to ConGa PunKs for trying something new on almost every track! I will definitely keep an eye out for new stuff by these guys. Now if I can just get "Guajira" out of my head...maybe by dancing really hard...
There's so much to say that it's really hard...
author: Linda Ulvaeus_Independent writer Santa BarbaraThere's so much to say that it's really hard to narrow it down. Exploding onto the scene with a refreshing point of view, the ConGa PunKs debut CD offers a musical banquet that is luminous and visionary. The innovative artistry of Cougar Estrada is the guiding force behind this contemporary statement, hatching new idioms with his musical dexterity. These beautifully crafted tight and colorful stylings cross boundaries personal and cultural, human and sacred. Every track leads to a different region, mood and texture, each member of the band enhancing its flavor. Spiritually uplifting (with plenty of dark spunk,) the music is ecstatic and the ritual is healing. Insightful lyrics and rich rhythmic structures abound. An inspired musical document that is monstrous all the way through, this bountiful harvest of songs is ace. Check out what's happening here, this is really cool.
ConGa PunKs plays a new kickass style of rock that really rocks
author: Melody Elizabeth_Kazaa.comConGa PunKs plays a new kickass style of rock that really rocks. Known to really rock the house they play a style that is impossible to describe. ConGa PunKs takes 4 musicians from separate bands into one. The guys bring their own influences, styles & techniques together into a band with incredible presence and killer music. ConGa PunKs was formed in late 2000 after 2 yrs of practice, prep and writing. Now that ConGa PunKs is together, and have release this Masterpiece, Music's Genre Defiance, they’re bringing a new style of rock music that fans can't get enough of.
This band explores a light, WorldBeat sound.
author: Will LernerPress Reviews This band explores a light, WorldBeat sound influenced by Latin, Funk, Jazz, Rock and African rhythms and propelled by an excellent drummer. Just when you think you've pegged them, they go and churn out Thrash Metal as if it were the only thing they ever wanted to play. At least they feel free to follow their muse. - .
My review: REALLY GOOD!!!
author: Crack MCIf I had to compare it to a contemporary artist, I'd say that if Beck were to sequester himself in the barrio for a few years, he'd probably want his band to sound like this. Funky, hard, spacey, very danceable. Every song is completely different, and it doesn't sound like anything on the radio.
Pleasurable, Tasty Gumbo; Noteworty Production; Look Forward to More
author: Rob EbertWhat a pleasurable disc on a lot of levels. Glad my friend turned me on to it. ConGa PunKs’ Music’s Genre Defiance is a highly musical gumbo with a lot of tasty, varied ingredients: the heavy-bottomed horns-and-percussion Latin drive of Guajira and A Dios Delia; the very cigs and martinis, woozy mood of the flute-led Minor; the punky, metallic rock rant of Hollywood’s Heaven; even Afro-Cuban percussion interludes (with twists) in the very short pieces Perro Los Rumberos and Little Baby Batu. There’s even a brief reggae-feeling section near the end of the highly Latin ¿Ya Te Vas? Many of these pieces have two, or even three distinct feels within their separate sections, but, rather than feeling contrived or mere gimmicks, stand as unusual, but still organic grooves. The production of the CD, by Cougar Estrada, is noteworthy in itself. These musical effects add texture and detail to the tunes without distracting from the musical values of the work. Highlights include: Minor’s flute and flanged wah-wah guitar coupled with turntable scratching and old, scratchy record background; clavinet counterpoint to horns leading to a vibes break blending to a free-form vocal and sax yowl and ending with a trumpet and flute interjection on Why Did You Act Like That?; Your Way has cool acoustic guitar and mariachi trumpet accents on a piece in 5/4 time. …A fine initial effort. I look forward to hearing more from the ConGa PunKs. Rob Ebert Independent Writer Minneapolis, MN
