notes

The Crooners play a pure rock 'n' roll that brings together elements of blues, swing, country and folk music. The trio formed on the streetcorners of Paris in the summer of 2003. With resonator guitars, harmonicas and a homemade washtub bass, the band drew spontaneous crowds with their high-energy performances. Since their start as a busking phenomenon, the Crooners have built a unique electric sound that brings new energy to American roots music.

Musicians:
Kevin Denton – vocals, resonator guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, piano

Nyles Fitzgerald – vocals, washtub bass, acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, piano

Chris Merkley – vocals, resonator guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitars, harmonica

Special Guests: AJ Strauss (trumpet, piano), Thom Bryan (slide guitar)

Produced at Electric Wilburland Studios, Ithaca, NY

This CD ranges from great, knee-slappin' dancy tunes to some relaxed, mellow grooves. Great fun. Brings me back to their live shows. Only wish I could see them again.

  • Hell Just Got a Kick Ass Washtub Player

Nyles was a cocksure ballbuster, which is why he fit in with the rest of us. I could always count on him to cut me back down to size and, within the same evening, get my back, if I hadn't been ditched for some 23 year old chick. In mean drunken quips he betrayed a streak of self-righteousness and an attendant, closely guarded optimism. I won't try to contextualize his death. I'm lucky to have known him for however long I did. So many of us are starting sparks, cupping a small pile of twigs and lint; blowing lightly and steadily in the hopes of starting a real fire. He had his own sh*t going on, but look below at the mongrel list of folks YOU'VE NEVER EVEN MET and tell me he didn't help put some of their sh*t on fire, too. Nyles, I miss you. I finally spelled your name correctly.

This is the CD I reach for when I want to get into a good mood. It's cheerful, it's fun and it makes me want to move.

  • Excellent musicianship
    author: Swede from FatCat Radio

Top notch musicianship. Top notch production. Intelligent songwriting with harmonies reminscient of C.S.N & Y. Very strong disc. Standout tracks include: 'New Kind of Blue' and 'Give A Little Peace To You'.

The CD is wonderful. I love everything about it. Just wanted to say that I saw you play in NYC at Joe's Pub last month. It was great!
