Keith Terry & Crosspulse

An arts organization dedicated to the creation, performance and documentation of rhythm-based intercultural music and dance.

The San Francisco Bay Guardian calls them, A wonder-producing quintet -- they drum, they dance, they chant, they slap and pat their torsos and limbs, they make visual music that fills a room with physical excitement. The five members of the ensemble bring with them a multitude of influences -- from body music, jazz, Afro-Cuban and West African drumming -- to Balinese gamelan, South Indian solkatu, and the music of the Middle East, Japan and the Caribbean. Loud, rowdy, athletic, playful, subtle, delicate and ethereal -- their sounds and movement are fluently integrated, enabling us to see music and hear dance. The ensemble has three albums: Keith Terry & Crosspulse (available only on cassette from www.crosspulse.com), Serpentine, and the newly released Body Tjak/The Celebration Soundtrack. Body Tjak is also available on VIDEO Crosspulse was brought together by Keith Terry in December 1992 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Concert highlights include the UCLA Center for Performing Arts, San Francisco's Cowell Theater, New York's Joyce Theater, the Arts Festival of Atlanta, and the Indonesian Arts Festival in Bali. Crosspulse Percussion Ensemble is a quintet of three men and two women: Five drummers who move and sing. Part international drill team, part polycultural rhythm section, the ensemble brings together synchronized movement, world drumming and innovative body music. Weaving the oldest musical instrument, the human body, with instrumental webs of hand drums, bells, claves, gongs, shek'er'e, bamboo stamping tubes, taiko, berimbau and more -- Crosspulse embodies a virtual world tour. Though the Crosspulse Percussion Quintet had a wildly successful farewell concert and dance party in November, 2001, the group is only ceasing as an ongoing touring ensemble. Crosspulse is currently appearing as a quartet through May 2002 with the Adventures In Music (AIM) Program, as sponsored by the San Francisco Symphony. This quartet features Edgardo Cambon, Tacuma King, Evie Ladin and Amara Tabor-Smith. Crosspulse will continue it’s educational outreach, exemplifying the mission of Crosspulse, Inc. to blend and bend rhythmic music and dance traditions, and promote intercultural communication. Artistic Director Keith Terry will also call on Crosspulse musicians for special projects. Most world music samplers and box sets don't cover as much ground, and few other global fusion bands execute their eclecticism with such attention to detail, such a combined sense of reverence and fun, and such a generosity of spirit.
