notes
San Diego country duo Darlin' and Rose offer a traditional approach to their whiskey-soaked ballads and honky tonk jams. Aggressively taking the local scene by storm, their true-to-life cowboy ethos and impressive musical experience made them one of the most recognizable Americana acts in the independent world. Darlin' is really Sylvester E. Bowen, the owner of a popular guitar shop in San Diego. Growing up with a country singer/songwriter as a father, he took to the music at an early age. In fact, his father was also a blacksmith who built wagons for Hollywood movie and television sets. In a bizarre twist of fate, Bowen grew up riding the same horse that television cowboy Little Joe rode in the classic American series Bonanza. As for Rose, she is really known as Nisha, an actress/musician that grew up playing the guitar and performing her own country songs. After graduating from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, she started a band on the Sunset Strip and tried to make a living in Los Angeles. Disillusioned with the area, Nisha moved to San Diego and started writing with Bowen almost immediately. Recording their eponymous debut in 2001, the duo quickly became a hit because of their raw, honest approach to a genre that had been associated with stylish, mainstream pop songs. A year later, Tomorrow, Yesterday won them accolades from the underground traditionalist country scene that had sprung up in the wake of the alternative country boom of the 90's. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

The stock of Americana/country duo Darlin' and Rose has risen!
author: TROY JOHNSON - SLAMM MAGAZINEThe first song on Darlin'and Rose, Honky Tonk Eyes backed by intricate fiddle parts, she sings "Eyes as blue as Colorado, smile as big as Texas," setting up a rustic imagery that never goes away. Rose has a great deep country voice with the nonchalant resonance of someone who's gained a lot of wisdom through a lot of pain. The songs on Darlin' and Rose are tales of desire (requited or unrequited) or of just being alone, with fiddle, weeping steel guitar, mandolin, harp, and acoustic guitars. "Million Dollar Smile," with its wobbly steel guitar atmospherics is country as cabaret. "My Tears Have Gone To Pain" is a masterful Americana jazz/blues ballad. With a great double bass line and a howling harp, Rose sings "The forcast for tomorrow is the same, not matter if the sun shines it's gonna rain." And you feel it like an old wound that aches when the moistures up. Goes well with Lucinda Williams, Joe Henry, heartbreak....
Darlin' and Rose are a couple of artists/writers that have teamed up, both perso
author: Linda Fryer, Country Fryed NewsTheir work, which I consider "traditional" country, shows up on this album, in it's full glory! The first track on the CD is VERY country and sung by Rose. "Honky Tonk Eyes" has some great lyrics, and the instrumentals are pure and held back a bit, so you can HEAR those lyrics! I like that. Another song on this CD that I liked a lot, is "My Name Is Rose." It's a poignant song, which has a special place here. It will mean something to any listener, I'm sure. It's a great tune. The very last track on this album is called "My Tears Have Gone To Pain." This song makes me think of those oldie songs on the Patty Page records. Rose has her own tag on her songs, and she doesn't NEED to sound like anyone. I guess it's the rhythm in this tune…. It's kinda like that old song called "Fever". The song is very good, and Rose has a voice that can send chills down your spine. I highly recommend this CD, folks. Rose has a wonderfully deep and harmonious voice that she knows how to use to its fullest extent. And Darlin' has his very own sound and style. I like this pairing. I'm sure they do too! And I'm pretty sure you, the listeners, will too! Their Americana/blues/cabaret/country, is a very unique blend of music, and is getting lots of airplay.

author: Thomas Leary Muledog MagazineIf you like great two part harmony in a Traditional style with some really tasty steel guitar this is the CD for you! They sing so well together! On "Honky Tonk Eyes" and "Memories" there are some very nice choruses that sound almost like the Everly Brothers only with an Everly Brother and sister. They have been consistently topping the Worldwide charts with some of the best Traditional Country we've heard. There is some great steel guitar on the CD that makes the songs stand out. The steel guitar is played By Californian Doug Meyer and is a real highlight of the CD due to the fantastic sound he gets with the traditional as well as some experimental styles. "She Started Drinkin'" is the hit on the CD and has been getting a lot of airplay all around the world. It is a tear jerkin' drinkin' song and who can get enough of them? We'd like to see them capitalize on their strongest point and sing together even more than they do now. Good examples of how that can be incredibly effective: The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and The Rembrandts. A real surprise came on the last track "My Tears Have Gone To Pain". This is a Jazz/Blues/Torch Song with nice harmonica, brush drum set and string bass. It has a real 40's feel and is a sleeper hit. I think it may be my personal favorite rounding out the album nicely.
Darlin' and Rose - Great CD!
