The story behind David V Dougherty’s first album ‘the DVD’

The album David V Dougherty recorded started in January 2004 and was finally completed in the summer of 2005. David was introduced to Tim Sonnefeld after a Townhall show at the Fire, long before they ever started working together on the album. Sometime later, David was hosting an open mic night at Steel City Coffee House when Jim Greer a musician and friend of Tim’s suggested that David record with Tim.

The first session consisted of David coming to the Townhall farmhouse in Schwenksville, PA with his acoustic guitar and a drum machine. Not having a band at the time David was using his voice, a drum machine, harmonica, kazoo and guitar at live performances. After finishing the day David left with a CD containing 5 songs, 2 tracks with the drum machine, real drums, guitar, vocals and bass and 3 acoustic tracks with just guitar and vocals. After giving the CD a listen to a few times David realized he wanted more. He wanted a full length, well produced CD. So he made another appointment to add more instruments and songs.

This continued for a long time. Sometimes David and Tim wouldn’t see each other for months at a time. This way David could save money and listen to the recordings and know exactly what needed to be added, mixed or taken away from each song. Also because of the busy touring schedule of Townhall at the time. Sessions were sometimes cancelled due to the touring. Then the remaining members of Townhall, still living in the Schwenksville farmhouse moved to Philadelphia. This is another reason the album took so long. Another reason was that David was in a real bad car accident in November of 2004. In the accident David totaled his car in a head on collision and was left with a scar on his face, minor scrapes, bruises and debt. After taking the winter of 2004 to recover from the accident David made plans to do the last session with Tim.

Finally, in the spring of 2005 David met up with Tim in the home of ‘Young’ Samuel Stanford in south Philly to put the finishing touches on the album. Although the album was never completed to the extent that Tim wished it could have been, David was ready for the album to be finished and move on. David had the ‘unofficial’ CD release party at Steel City Coffee House in July of 2005. Today David continues to sell the album at shows and on the web at www.CDbaby.com/davidvdougherty.

Review
"Radio Friendly, I Absolutely Got Their Music...Even The Scooby Doo Song Look For It. I Loved The Lyrics And Catchiness Of Each Individual Song. The Prepared Set Was Professional And Moved Along Smoothly. Fun Songs That Had Your Head Nodding Or Foot Tapping. Good Vocals To Good Performance. "

Well written songs with introspective and witty lyrics that makes me smile and happy. I love Scooby Snacks! City of Oceans reminds me of weekend trips to the shore. Isabell makes me sad, like a rainy day at the beach. Astronomy 101 is a bar drinking, dance floor anthem!
