The Deja Voodoo Band features DC (Harmonica, Vocals), Mark Verba (Guitars, Vocals), Wil Jones (Drums, Vocals), and Todd Becker (Bass). Their new CD is titled "Back For More..." and includes mostly original material with three covers, 11 songs in all.
Lookin' Back (Gary Moore) starts the set in fine fashion. Listen to DC blow the harp and tell me if you don't hear Charlie Musslewhite. Good vocals, too. What impressed me was Verba's guitar work. Creative, but not rushed. There's a little battle here from both harmonica and guitar for supremacy. Who wins? The listener. I'm Runnin' is the first original DVB tune on this CD, and it's a good one. Nice blues number that would fit well into any club on Maxwell St. (Chicago).
You remember that Low Rider (War) was recorded without the benefits of guitars or harmonica. Not on this cover. Jones and Becker lay down a funky little bass groove, and Verba and DC float over the top of it, creating a fusion of rock, jazz, blues, funk, etc...very cool. Panhead is another cover from DVB, a driving instrumental which features sweet "wah wah" style string bending. Box & Load is another original, and the strongest of them all. What great blues/rock recording doesn't have an homage to the working man? Two at Ten, Ten at Two is also an original. DC and the band slow down the pace on this one and create a pure blues tune dripping with testosterone laced lyrical inside jokes.
Heidi's Hoedown is another instrumental original that features some nice changes. Great road song. Porn on Steroids is original and must have been a challenge to write. A tune that compares a trip to the zoo with a visit to the nudie bar... think about it. Searing solo work from Verba on this one.
Surprising here is a cover of Robin Trower's Too Rolling Stoned. Trower is one of those artists you don't hear too many covers of. The tune was a rousing success at the Biker's Ball, what with the last half of the song being the dirty strut through rock 'n' roll land that it is. DVB pulls it off nicely. Teenager Blues rounds out the disc, complete with wailing guitar, looking back-on-it-all type lyrics, and blues emotion. Great song! Bonus track 11 (not listed) is a cover of "The Munsters" theme song. Why? Why not!

Excellent music - Great CD

author: Bluez ManThe songs are well thought out and musically show this bands versatility. Back For More leaves you wanting to come back for more again and again. Highlights are the original song Two at Ten, Ten at Two and the cover of Gary Moores Lookin' back. If you like Rock flavored blues you'll love this disk. Although Too Rolling Stoned is done well on the disk ....I wish they had played it closer to their live version.
