notes
Destrung's unique brand of music is a mixture of strummy acoustic guitars, bluesy tones and straight up raw rock and roll. The vibe is somewhere near the sound of The Violent Femmes, Lou Reed & Pavement. Destrung is a 3 piece band started recently by Jonas Kleiner, who is the guitarist of the ska-punk band, Buck-O-Nine.
You may remember Buck-O-Nine from their upbeat ska song "My Town", or perhaps you have seen them live. The San Diego band toured relentlessly for years. Several Buck-O-Nine songs have also been used in major motion pictures and television.
Destrung's debut album, People Watching, was written over the span of a couple years in the back of a tour bus, in hotel rooms and at home during some much needed down time from touring. After the CD was recorded, Jonas hooked up with his friend Rob Paterson, from the San Diego band the Soultans, to play Bass and his buddy Eric from the band Surf Report on drums. Destrung plays shows in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Excellent: More of Jonas Kleiner is a very good thing...
author: Derek Finley (dfinley@miva.com)This CD is first of what's hopefully more to come. I really enjoyed the opportunity to hear the songwriting and storytelling that Jonas Kleiner brings with this new body of work. As a bluesy and soulful departure, it's obviously very different than what we've heard from him in his previous life with Buck'O Nine... But it's refreshingly that. Musically, it offers a bevy of melodic sweet spots that invite you to sing along -- later finding you whistling or humming them to yourself... Likewise the songs in People Watching present vivid imagery in the listener's mind, from an honest view to our world in the present day. With bright social commentary, mixed with the poignant references to personal experience, Mr. Kleiner debuts as a seasoned artist in his delivery of this great collection of serious works. I highly recommend it.
