notes

"As a composer and performance artist, I've been looking for those rare occasions where a moment or situation freezes all thought processes and rhetorical rationalizations. All my soundscapes for Shirin Neshat have been romantic journeys into a deep zone, searching for universal, sonic metaphors to evoke language from her silent narrative abstractions; creating a space which travels beyond referential codes and transcends into the hyper-real, the surreal and the timeless." [SD]

The "Turbulent" collaboration with visual artist Shirin Neshat won first prize in Madrid at the ARCO Contemporary Art Fair. The 35mm double screen installation opens at Documenta Museum in Kassell, Germany and the Museum of Photography in Paris. The installation will continue to tour major international museums including The Reina Sophia in Madrid, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Sussan performs her intense solo concerts live at the openings.

I was very lucky to catch Shirin Neshats video installation in Madrid. My brother and I were captivated by it and must have watched the film ten times. For me it's a master piece. I scoured the internet to find any track of Sussan Deyim and the WONDERFUL cdbaby had it. I love almost all the tracks from this cd. It's a very special thing when art and music collide. I admit that I love sound and this cd is full of thought provoking soundscapes. I love it!!

We went into an immediate fervour for Sussan Deyhim after seeing the show of Shirin Neshat video installations in the SMCS in Amsterdam. The videos were certainly the most convincing, and therefore most fascinating, examples of this thorny art form. Since this is a short review we'll just say you GOT to see ALL of them. Then the music. In the show it is enhanced by the mirror juxtaposition of the videos and loudspeakers -Shirin Neshat works a lot with dualities. On the CD it still comes through. Not beautiful, not pleasing, but powerful. Sound patterns, tapestries, that get under your skin. It isn't necessary to see Shirin Neshat's images to be moved by the music of Sussan Deyhim, all of the complexities are there in her voice. Oh, and 'Madman of God' is incredible too.

  • A very good compilation of unique scores.

The Music is very great, i have never heard anything like it! I saw Rapture in the museum der moderne in Salzburg, where i live, and noticed the great music! I never thought that there would be a CD release of it, but as i saw it here immediatley bought it. i hope there will be future releases of Sussan Deyhim's Shirin neshat-scores! The music is very recommendable.

  • carries you away to another world of sound

There is nothing quite like this CD, my favourite of hers so far. it contains the singing from Turbulent, Shirin Neshat's awesome video. Deyhim sounds like a mystic dove one minute and some sort of bittern/bagpipe the next ! Carries you away to another world of sound...

  • Really great, evocative, and original music!

If you've seen the Shirin Neshat show, this CD is a great way to remember the awesome video where it originated. The last track on the CD, which is also the title track, is probably the most powerful--this is from the film of Sussan's solo. All of the pieces are highly original and evocative. I strongly recommend it.
