Now available, this digitally remastered edition of YOU ARE THE SONG from pianist Dick Hindman features enhanced sound quality and clarity.
This is a collection of splendidly sensitive piano stylizations by jazz pianist and composer Dick Hindman and is intended to be a celebration of love songs. In contrast to his preceding project, "Sheena's Song", which consists entirely of Dick's own compositions, all but one of the songs on this CD were written by other composers. Many of the pieces are familiar American standards which have been well known to music lovers for many years, ranging from Richard Rodgers' stirring anthem "With A Song In My Heart" to George Gershwin's smoldering "How Long Has This Been Going On?". Several of the other tunes, particularly the bewitching "Maybe September" by Percy Faith, are less familiar, but equally deserving of careful listening. And in Dick's capable hands, they all spring to life, glowing with warmth and quiet intensity.
Alongside the American standards, two of Brazil's greatest composers are showcased. Antonio Carlos Jobim's great melodies are represented by the seldom heard, but enchanting tribute to "Luiza", and the utterly heartbreaking lament "How Insensitive". And from the great singer/composer Ivan Lins, Dick has selected two of his loveliest and most unforgettable melodies, "Bilhete" and "Love Dance".
Dick has said of this project, "I was aiming to make a recording which could be used as background music, but which you could also listen to attentively without being disappointed. Most background music will drive you crazy if you actually just sit down and listen to it, because there's really nothing there except fluff. At the same time, a lot of jazz recordings are so aggressive that listening to them in a relaxed frame of mind seems out of the question. I think that this CD has enough musical content to satisfy the most refined ear, yet it never jumps up and gets in your face. The operative word is understatement."
While Dick's playing may be understated and unassuming, its simplicity is very deceptive, for beneath it lies a burning intensity and lyricism, as well as a profound knowledge of harmony and of the potentialities of the piano as a means of deep personal expression. In this recording, Dick combines his lifelong love affair with the classical piano repertoire with his passion for jazz, improvisation and good tunes. The result is a terrific mix that is not to be missed. Highly recommended.
