A Northwest band known for their distinctive lyrics, striking female vocal harmonies and tight bass/guitar/drums/keys lineup, The Ditty Twisters pull out all the stops on their raucous sophomore release, Piñata Baby. Called "one of Po-Town's most original outfits" by Willamette Week, the band continues to break new ground as they gradually move away from the punkabilly swamp sound that characterized their first album. With a harder, more bass-inflected vibe, Piñata Baby delivers relentless rhythms and deceptively simple pop tune hooks.
Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (Frank Zappa, Oingo Boingo, Tori Amos), Piñata Baby resulted from the crucible of creativity that was formed when the band experienced several life-changing events over the past year, including separation, marriage, death, and, of course, the addition of a new guitarist who likes to play in overdrive. The album's sweet melodies and bitter lyrics yield the results of some of life's harder lessons, such as what happens when a boy wants to be queen of the rodeo, or what may result from a bitter argument with the devil himself.
If you can see them live, do so. Now. But if you can't, just buy a CD, sit back with a delicious adult beverage, and drink in the hot licks and warm harmonies.

A good CD that is part humor, part sultry rock

There are a couple songs that get kind of annoying after 10 times through the album, but for the most part the humor of the songs is lasting, and the musical construction of them is genius. Raw, sultry lead vocals backed by sugar-pop background vocals and serious rock & rollin' instrumentation. It's a fresh twist on some classic sounds that I heartfully recommend.
Another Great One
author: Ed GoodsteinThough focus of this album is a little bit less 'novelty fun' than VICODIN SAT. NIGHT, it's just as great IMO. Maybe a few more pop strains n'all, but I like that & they can really rock too. Marie's gruff 'horny' vocals on "Whole Lotta Jose" outstanding, also "Smart Chick," but everything really good. And still enough twang to rope in alt. country enthusiasts I think. Great group, & their albums are nicely varied IMO.
