(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

Ferocious UK alt-rock / punk-metal hybrid of passionate, energetic and visceral music - at times like Rage Against The Machine in a fistfight with Sepultura, this is politically charged alternative rock for a new generation. And yes, the title is ironic.

notes

Ironically-titled and stirring furious release from British underground alternative rock outfit Djevara.

Djevara view themselves as a descendent of a long tradition of British punk rock bands, although their sound is a hybrid of punk, metal, rock and ethnic influences reflecting the cultural diversity in the band. Passionate and fiercely political, music and mission combine, projected by a dedicated DIY ethic inspired by bands such as Fugazi and Henry Rollins Band. Its alternative rock, inspired both by hardcore punk rock, the alternative scene of the early 90s, classic Hendrix era balls-out-rock, and less obvious influences ... from as far left-field as experimental British music ranging from the awkward (yet brilliant) music of artists such as Therapy? And Massive Attack.

Based in London (England, UK), the band developed from the noise-punk act "Suck". Djevara gained national recognition on the underground scene through passion and determination, and eschewed label offers in favour of releasing their debut album through their own label. They book their own shows, and encourage and support others within a throbbing British underground rock scene brimming with a new generation of awesomely talented bands... a scene they are proud to be a part of. Their first record, "God Is White", is a powerful statement of intent; a deliberately thought-provoking and potentially controversial piece of emotive, visceral music anticipation of which has already had BBC Radio 1's Rock Show describing the band as "magnificent" and even reviews of the preceding taster demo EP were greeted with "first class debut... 8/10" reviews in the UK's leading metal/heavy rock monthly (Metal Hammer).

With the release of this CD Djevara hope to take their music and their sentiments of thoughtful resistance out to the world...

  • Storming first offering! Sophomore out 5th Feb 2007

I only just came across this site. I was looking for Djevara's second album "Third World War (cast the first stone)" due out at the time of writing. God is White is a storming tirade against everything that is wrong in the world today. Bass (Usuyak Bassey) does not shrink from attacking in unequivocal terms all the greedy capitalists, warmongers, racists and bigots he can get at in 14 eye watering, ear splitting tracks. He spits venom in the face of Politicians including Robert Mugabe. (Bass was born in this country but his parents were from Zimbabwe). He weaves cryptic rhymes while always getting a point across, even in what sounds like a straight-forward mosh pit filler like "Meanwhile South of the border" which is about western imperialist exploitation of third world resources, even though the lyric says "we're gonna make the people JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP!" The music is fast and furious most of the time but steps back occasionally for some quiet reflection before storming on. The musicianship is top notch and of course the production is exactly as it should be since it was controlled at every stage by the band. I have read a few reviews of this album and it amuses me that the most common criticism is that whilst it's good it is too long! I bet if they bought a wedding ring they wouldn't moan that it had more gold than they expected would they? Don't buy this album if you are a Neo-conservative, Blairite, fascist etc etc. Also if you think Coldplay are quite a heavy rock band. Otherwise you should buy it. You will be giving to charity at the same time, Djevara always give 10% of their income to charity.
