notes

From headlining at the Blue Note with his jazz piano trio to his sold out performances as a singer/songwriter David Morgan is consistently producing and performing music that is diverse and dynamic. “David is a truly extraordinary pop singer-songwriter—right alongside his glorious preceding accomplishments as a jazz musician.” (Jim Bessman of Billboard Magazine)

Originally from San Francisco, Morgan grew up listening to everything from the Beatles to John Coltrane to Chopin. In 1987, when still in high school, he was severely bitten by the jazz bug. Two years later he moved to the University of New Orleans to pursue his love of jazz where jazz was born. At UNO, he studied piano and composition with legends Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste. It was there that he first played with Wynton Marsalis, James Rivers, Wes Anderson and Nycholas Payton. “My time in New Orleans, studying with Ellis and Harold by day and playing in clubs almost every night was an unparalleled stage in my development. I cherish that time in my life”

Before heading for New York, producer/composer Battiste released his first jazz CD, “Comment” on AFO Records. Battiste says, “His credentials as composer, producer, arranger, leader and player are rooted in the best traditions of jazz: taste, wit, integrity and swing. Did I forget to mention FUNK?! New Orleans left some stuff on him.” Morgan has since released two additional critically acclaimed live jazz CD’s, “Hands of Time” (Turnipseed Music) and “The David Morgan Trio-Live at the Blue Note” (Half Note Records) featuring drummer Jason Marsalis, bassist David Grossman and guitarist Peter Bernstein.

For the past 10 years, Morgan has been the musical director and producer for
singer/songwriter Neshama Carlebach. Their fifth CD, “Journey” was released in October, 2004 to fantastic reviews. They are finishing up their latest pop CD, due out at the end of 2006. They consistently tour worldwide- from the U.S. to Russia, South Africa, England and Israel.

As a composer, Morgan has been busy writing for television and film. He composed jazz music for CBS’s hit Judging Amy, and continues to write rock, pop, funk and orchestral score and themes for CBS Sports. He wrote the musically diverse score for the comedy feature film, “Hacks,” written and directed by ex-Saturday Night Live writer, Glenn Rockowitz. Morgan also performs and records with singer/songwriter Peter Himmelman and recently arranged and played piano and Hammond organ on an R&B album produced by legend, Nile Rogers. His new pop/rock album Ordinary Glory was just released.

“Ordinary Glory is an album that is rather sensitive than sentimental and it shows the extraordinary within the ordinary. His voice touches where he has to touch- somewhere deep where there is darkness and light. Morgan did an excellent job producing Ordinary Glory, with songs that have echoes of jazz and rock. Simply beautiful.” (***1/2 Wim Boluijt- Heaven Magazine)

  • Fine pop music with a positive, infectious vibe.
    author: Power of Pop Magazine

I love this job! Especially when it places into my hands such fine pop music. With his piano-based songs and resonant tenor, the comparisons with Billy Joel are hard to resist but Morgan is his own (piano) man. A very positive (infectious) vibe permeates Ordinary Glory. It may be old world/old school sensibility but give me a dose of David Morgan over an overload of Five For Fighting anyday.

  • beautiful songs

some truly beautiful melodies. the cd hasn't left our cd changer since we purchased it months ago.

  • Exeptional songwriting, unique album!
    author: Michael O'hara

I love his voice and get what he's doing completely. His ideas, chord changes, vocal melodies and background vocals are uniqely David. I like his simple productions. They work and do not get in the way of his exceptional songwriting abilities. He really did take to heart all of the writers he has played for, and has sculpted his own style. Bravo...well done!

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

The CD is a masterpiece. BUY IT! it is my favorite new albums (I mostly like classic rock)

  • Truly extraordinary pop singer-songwriter.
author: Jim Bessman of Billboard Magazine

I’ve been a big fan of David Morgan since I first saw him in Neshama Carlebach’s band—then realized I’d seen him before in Peter Himmelman’s. So I couldn’t be happier with “Ordinary Glory,” since it features his collaborations with both while establishing himself as a truly extraordinary pop singer-songwriter in his own right—right alongside his glorious preceding accomplishments as a jazz musician.

  • Excellent

great lyrics, cool tunes, awsome rhythms, it's got it all!

  • Refreshing!
    author: Eric Asa-Dorian

Well produced, and sounding good. It's as if a young Billy Joel did a shot of Squeeze, and then took a bath in Art Garfunkel. Dave paints a picture with words, and is supported by some terrific musicians. This is a wonderful, uplifting CD.

  • outstanding

This is a great album from a talented musician. The melodies are contagious and sophisticated. Listen to the melody of Thousand Miles of Wasted Time. No-one writes melodies like that!!! The lyrics will move the soul of anybody out there who experiences the joys and challenges of living.

  • Feeling funky? Not without this CD you ain't!
    author: Jamie Donohoe

Crystal clear "pop" melodies infused with jazz riffs will keep your feet tapping as you listen. Morgan's lyrics range from romantic to playful and even in the most somber moments remain optimistic; you can sense a smile behind every word. It's hard to make comparisons here: Is this Randy Newman meets Ellis Marsalis? David Gray playing with Grand Funk Railroad? The album combines genres effortlessly.

  • Ordinary Glory is anything but ordinary...it's in my TOP 10.
    author: MegaLon Schwear

This album is heart and soul on a shirt sleeve. Ordinary Glory is no ordinary album. His heartfelt lyrics move you and his addictive melodies groove you. It's an unexpected jazzapopadelicfunk fusion that just makes that moment in life feel all right...just what music is supposed to do. Congrats David!!!

Ordinary Glory is spectacular!!!! David Morgan's talent as an incredible pianist was expected but the soulful lyrics and THAT voice of his were both an amazing and pleasant surprise. It's the type of CD you want to listen to over and over again...and I do.

  • Morgan is a star!
    author: David Abelson

Morgan is a rising star. His combination of soul & jazz is very refreshing!

Rarely is a premiere pop album extraordinary - But David Morgan's 'Ordinary Glory' is right up there with the Best of them - Elton's Tumbleweed Connection, Paul's Band on the Run, and you know who's Sweet Baby James. Many people can sing a tune, others know how to write them, and others are great players. In David Morgan all 3 are wrapped into 1 Outstanding artist and performer. Every tune tells a story that hooks you from the start. 'It's Love' alone is worth the price of admission to his musical world. This is a Five Star CD that you won't stop playing!

  • A broad range of songs that you want to listen to over and over again!
    author: m. barshay

This album contains a broad range of songs, and they're all great. The beats and melodies of the songs are excellent. You'll find yourself wanting to listen to them over and over again. David Morgan's talent as a pianist is obvious to any listener, and his vocals add a unique dimension to his songs. I highly recommend this album, and eagerly await his next!

Listening to his songs, you will get the sense that he's totally connected to his music; he sings his lyrics with conviction in away that makes you feel like there is something important going on. The melodies are memorable; a few times listening through the songs and you'll be humming them unconsciously. There are a variety of moods represented on this album which I think demonstrates his range and competence as a singer, song writer and piano player. Even people with the most discerning musical tastes will appreciate it.

some years ago when i was supplementing my income as a playwright by writing occasional liner notes for jazz companies i wrote a review of an album by a well known jazz pianist who had recorded an album of current broadway songs. the pianist rejected my notes as being condescending because i kept emphasizing how good a jazz player he was even though some of the tunes on the album were banal. no such review applies here. yes, david is a fabulous jazz pianist, but here he emerges also as a singer and a songwriter reminiscent of michael franks and john lennon at their best. -- julian barry
