notes

BETWEEN REALITIES captures the swirling, amorphous sound of dreamSTATE's ambient soundscape installation "waveforms".

This live microphone recording, made on location at The H5 Project in Toronto, merges waveforms' undulating electronic textures with the urban soundscape of the street outside.

Drifting through waters light and dark, BETWEEN REALITIES maintains a deep ambience ideal for chilling out, artistic pursuits or introspection.

  • Ambient Masterpiece
    author: David O'Toole

This album is amazing, it consists of continuous ambient soundscapes, and what makes it even more interesting is that this album was recorded live so the sounds of the people and other sounds can be heard on occasion, the album lasts for about an hour and the tracks all play in to each other, so it is best enjoyed in its entirety from start to finish... Reccomended...

  • Between Realities lies the peace which passeth all understanding....

Lovers of ambient music are a very selective, and select, market niche. Within the group are those who basically enjoy "New Age" exclusively for its relaxing qualities and its minimal demands on the intellect, and those who enjoy the trance state ambient induces because of its ability not just to soothe tension, but also to heighten awareness of the natural world. "Between Realities" is a superb experience for the latter. There are no sweet melodies, no quasi-Celtic songs, no delicate orchestration. Only a pure mediative drone enhanced by the random beauty that is actual noise. A cd for those select listeners who want both a soothing experience and one that expands the ability to concentrate at the same time.

It's like it takes me to a whole different place, a whole different reality. It literally takes my worries and stress away. Good job guys! This cd is exactly what I needed.

  • Between Realities - classic ambient EM
    author: D. Butler

dreamSTATE's Between Realities documents 1 hour of classic ambient Electronic Music, blending electronic loops and electroacoustic sounds with a "live" gallery environment and streetscape. Sonic elements ebb and flow to create an Eno-esque atmosphere, steeped in the liquid ether of deep space, subtle yet effective in the binaural field and ultimately satisfying for its psychoacoustic effect. Highly recommended!

Here's a secret from behind the scenes at CDBABY.COM dreamSTATE is our MOST-PLAYED CD in the whole store! It's irresistable to just leave this CD a couple times a day, every couple days. Makes you feel like you're in a dream. (Uh - hence the name?)

BETWEEN REALITIES is an intriguing sandwich of droning oscillations, found sounds and field recordings. The end result not only makes for excellent sleepy-time listening, but forces you to confront the unsung musique concrete in your creaking floorboards and booming furnace - generic household sounds will happily blend into the mix if you let them. Excellent CD! Radiates a sense of calm, very good for relaxing; Reminds me a lot of the calm releases of Brian Eno; I'm happy to have a copy of this recommendable release! [This message has been edited by F.Mark (edited May 27, 1999).]

Soft electronic washes phase in and out in an ever-changing state of ebb and flow. Totally beatless and smooth, the lush chords swirl mistily, merging and remerging into different billowing configurations. Trickling water sounds run through several passages, as do occasional waves of rippling electro-distortion. It translates into a dreamy hour-long listen for your own environs. David J. This is a great cd. Nothing really happens throughout the entire disk yet it remains inriguing and soothing and never gets boring. Even my wife likes this! Keep up the good work guys.

BETWEEN REALITIES consists of a one-hour slice from a soundscape installation entitled waveforms that ran continuously for eight months in 1996 and 1997 at The H5 Project holographic gallery in Toronto. Created using three MiniDisk players on shuffle and loop modes, the sounds produced by dreamSTATE for this installation were pure, deep ambience as originally defined by pioneer Brian Eno: Music that merges with the surroundings to create a different listening experience with every listen. And since it was recorded using an open microphone, sounds from the street and gallery space hum through the mix and merge with the sounds in the listener's environment, blurring the line between realities - just as the title suggests.
