notes

"dutch rall's rich voice bursts into jeff buckley falsetto while his low-register david bowie crooning resurrects shivers of over stimulation." synthesis

unique harmonies. down tempo beats. vast soundscapes. a work without compromise.

dutch grew up listening to his family's collection of sinatra and zeppelin records, as well as soundtracks to coppela films until discovering prince and the blue nile. then peter gabriel forced him to plunge into world-beat and he all but lost himself in a never-ending eno/ lanois loop. finally massive attack made him move and jeff buckley stirred his soul.

all of these influences can be felt on 12 past midnight. "brooding late-night music." kut 90.5

  • I loved it!
    author: Elizabeth Hoopes

The cd is awesome! I keep listening to it whenever I can! If I can, I'll get my music teacher to play it! It's great! Keep up the great work!

  • Wonderful, pure.

Dutch, 12+12 is truly great. I only wish it were longer! Where can I get that "Reason for the Beating of my Heart" song you played with Crysta Bell? I need to hear that now! The sixth song is the best.

  • Breathtaking. Fully realized work.

I'm not sure if any words can do justice to the greatness of this album. Rarely do we find somebody this realized and articulate. This guy knows what he's doing. When to say things, when to shut up, where to leave spaces. This music is like a mirror- it evokes feelings out of you, instead of force-feeding what the singer is feeling at the moment. To me it sounds lonely but rich, playful but serious, and sad but hopeful. If you have the patience to sit through Radiohead's Kid A (meaning - they both take time to develop full appreciation of them), then I think you'll "get" this music. Brilliant.

rarely do I get to hear such a refined artist. 12 past midnight is a breathtaking journey through the human soul. needless to say, i recommend you add this to your cart, now!

  • Synthesis. March 18th, 2002. Volume 8. Issue 27.
    author: Serge Thunderberg @ Synthesis

Dutch Rall's rich voice bursts into a Jeff Buckley falsetto while his low register David Bowie crooning resurrects shivers of over-stimulation... think Prince in his most sultry state. Slowly churning rhythms grind while the expansive synth strings and delayed guitar open a chasm to the soul.

  • The best in a long time
    author: Andrea Pikes

This is my new favorite album. It has both a thousand emotions and the same vibe at the same time. Dutch has the coolest voice I have ever heard, and his lyrics are great. I can't say enough good things about it. It's a rare find in the sea of today's so-so music.

  • In a trance
    author: Alicia

Dutch's voice and music puts you in that other place that only some music can. Like Jeff Buckley or the Cocteau Twins. He's my new favorite.

  • Suprised
    author: Carol

I purchased his cd at a cafe in S. L. Obispo where he was playing. His live performance is very good, but the cd is something else altogether. The harmonies remind me of Queen, and the base/ drums are like U2's slower music. It is a very "rich" recording and seems to get better with repeated listening. The instrument-only track makes my hair stand up.

  • Passionate, Emotional and Pure - The Last Temptation
    author: Michael The Funky Platypus

This album's mystical harmonies and intertwined rhythms offers an emotional journey deep into the soul of the artist. It is filled with beautiful keyboards and ambient guitar which flow between mystical rhythms from worlds afar. It stands out from the crowd of music to be something truly beautiful and original. It Is Accomplished!

  • Yummy
    author: Nicole The Obscure

Just want to tell the planet that 12 Past Midnight is one of my all time favorite cds. It grows on you and in you... won't let you go. The bass on the second song makes my whole body vibrate. The last song, Break You, should be listened to 100 times in a row. Yum, Yum, Yummy!

  • Few and Far Between...
    author: Johanna D

This is the what I have been waiting for. His voice is beautiful, his lyrics are grand and everything grooves. The vocals are hard to describe... brooding, sexual, complex. If you like Sade's beats and Bono's voice then you will love this.

  • Cannot take this cd out of my stereo!
    author: John*phunk

An absolutely gorgeous cd... Lyrical gems all throughout... this man believes in love and the long wait some must go through to get it... Brilliant and handsomely dark... Sexy to a fault... but when you got it... you got it! My musical tastes range from Basement Jaxx to John Coltrane... I own 16 cds. 12 past midnight is one of them.

  • Chills from head to toe!
    author: Laura Pascal

I actually bought this CD at a show of his in Dallas, but I've got to spread the word. Dutch's voice is unbelievably cool. He's got some Jeff Buckley, Bono and Bowie. Even Prince! And the grooves are very sexy. It's sort of like if Radiohead were a one man band trying play Peter Gabriel tunes. I don't know how else to describe it. Dutch should be the next big thing!
