Bass Player magazine Review of "The Dawning":"Inspired by his stints with Me'shell N'degeocello and Steve Coleman, and the solo turns of Marcus Miller, Dyson(layering his fretted and fretless MTD fives and NS Design electric upright, amongst others)creates deeply funky, sonically rich groove meditations. Sweet spots range from the go-go goaded skank of "Le Le's Lah Lah" to the fretless flights on "In The Midst Of". (Chris Jisi)
Growing up in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Dyson was exposed to a variety of styles including it's indigenous go-go funk. His matriculation to Berklee College in Boston opened him up to even more musically diverse situations to absorb. Upon graduation, saxman/ vocalists/recording artist "Walter Beasley" asked David to join his band. In 1989, He auditioned for "Maurice Starr"(producer/creator of "New Kids On The Block")Landing the gig and soon became the musical director for "New Kids On The Block". Dyson helped to take their show to an unprecedented pinnacle. When the "New Kids" took a two year hiatus, David moved on to tour/record with a vast selection of artists spanning from the eclectic jazz fusion of the "Hagens/Belden Band" (in which they received a grammy nomination two years in a row for consecutive recordings) to the R&B fame of 1997 Downbeat Poll winner "Me'shell N'degeocello". In December 1999, David released his debut CD "Soulmates" on his "Lohandfunk" label(which was eventually picked up and distributed worldwide by Warner Brothers-WEA). "Soulmates" met critical acclaim and is now followed up by Dyson's latest release "The Dawning". David recently occupied the bass seat with "Chuck Brown" and "Jonathan Butler" for 3 years and is currently with "Lalah Hathaway", "Pieces Of A Dream" and "Peter White", but does spot dates and studio work with various other artists as well. Fast gaining a reputation as a producer/songwriter(checkout "Pieces Of A Dream's" release "No Assembly Required" and "Tim Hagan's" grammy nominated "Animation/Imagination"), David is now working on his third release "Unleashed!" and continues to grow as one of today's most prolific artists.

author: StefanThe Dawning takes off where David's left us. This second CD presents an even more mature blend of blistering, jazzy funk and sweet mellow soul. David's playing is top notch and he's found a unique style that is as easy to recognise as it's enjoyable to listen to. I can't wait to hear more from this talented player.

author: hbhWhen is a bass player a good bass player? When he is a legend like Jaco Pastorius or popular like Marcus Miller? I have written about many bass player in the past. Names like Victor Wooten, Luico Hopper, Steve Clarke, Kenny Wright, Chuck Smith, Kim Davis, Woody Lingle, Mark Egan, Kirwan Brown, Sipho Gumede, Johann Asmundsson, Jimmy Haslip, Gerald Veasley, Peter Muller, Garry W. Grainger, David Hughes, Nelson Braxton, Mike Manson, Larry Antonino are showing that there is a big bass world with so many talents, that even websites specialized in bass cannot register all. A good opportunity to present David Dyson, an excellent bass player which can be heard on many great projects. Read the complete review at the above mentioned website.
