Emerald Jade "NOMINATED FOR THE BEST FEMALE JAZZ VOCALIST OF 2007" (ABMA - Las Vegas)

"Soul above the river"
BangKok Post - 4/21/2006

A new, high-end venue where the music is cool, the atmosphere's intimate and the elevation's perfect
- Brian Kent

The Hilton Millennium calculated well when it built its ThreeSixty Bar 130 metres above the river. It is an ideal distance, not too high as to be remote, but high enough to present a stunning panorama which, being on the Thon Buri bank, looks out onto illuminations of Bangkok's riverside hotels and the city's landmarks beyond. At the same time, it is not too high to preclude a kind of intimacy with the river. To add to the intimacy, the windows all around the 360-degree perimeter fan out and upwards at an angle, so that seated in the armchairs beside them you feel that you are leaning over the water with the lighted hotel shuttles flitting to and fro. It's a spacious, lofty room, its domed ceiling supported by tall columns which, under low lighting at night appear in shades of pale grey. And the lighting is low, too, when you have just arrived by the glass lift from the brightly-lit hotel, which, as new hotels often do, radiates an optimistic brightness. But club settings shun brightness. At ThreeSixty, the mood is cool, the atmosphere intimate, and if you need more light to read the menu or make a note of a phone number, it is right by your hand on the table. On each one there is a free-standing, portable white lamp whose output of light can be regulated by a switch at its base.
Well known in the US soul and jazz world, Emerald Jade and Craig Anthony perform six days a week at the ThreeSixty Bar.
The menu offers food items of easy-to-eat sophistication, such as lobster tail risotto with caviar mousseline, a trio of oysters, or foie gras in a port wine reduction. The drinks list is, needless to say, long and varied with encouraging prices. I singled out Charles Steiner Australian sparkling wine as an example, at 1,500 a bottle and 300 baht by the glass. Cocktails abound at 230 baht, 380 if they're with cognac or sake, and 650 baht with champagne. The individual lighting encourages you to feel that you are in your own space, that you have your own section of window and your own view.

The music has been well-calculated, too, voices in cool, jazz neo-soul style combining soothing warmth with distinctive jazz undertones.

The lead voice belongs to Emerald Jade and it is joined on occasions by that of Craig Anthony, an LA session musician who orchestrates the music and accompanies her. "We like what we do," he says. "It's music people can relate to, and we can have fun while we're doing it."

Both are well known in the soul jazz world of the USA, and now, through radio plays of their CD, A New Classic, in Europe as well. The title is appropriate as Emerald Jade is in the classic tradition of soul jazz singers with a modern sound. A New Classic features songs she has written herself, but at ThreeSixty, they were presenting the more familiar sounds of the '70s.

They opened with a song by one of the inspirational figures in their kind of music, "King of Vibes". Roy Ayres' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" was a sustained riff of words and melody with a hypnotic quality that encourages a laidback state of mind and a jazzy rhythm that is relaxing rather than urgent.

Emerald Jade was originally from Gary, Indiana, "Where the Jackson family comes from," she pointed out. But she has her own family in the music business; her son Jesse Powell and daughters Trina and Tamara are all well known recording artists. She was introduced to Craig by a mutual friend in the business and they decided that they should make the album together.

"In between recordings for the album, we fell in love and got married," said Emerald, and now they're a permanent duet. But what had brought them to Bangkok?

"That's easy," said Craig. "Our agent said, 'How would you like to go to Thailand?' and we jumped at the opportunity."

"It's been wonderful discovering a different culture and trying to learn a new language," Emerald added.

Craig turned to the audience, which, at around 10pm had begun to grow.

"Enjoy the music, feel the vibe," he said, and laid down a funky samba beat for Brazilian Rhyme, over which Emerald sang vocalise, a haunting, fluid melody without words.

The words of the next song were very clear and quite familiar: the smooth, shady voice of Sade was recalled in Smooth Operator, which drew much applause and requests for more of the same. While service staff in slinky black gowns smoothly operated, glided between guests mixing drinks at their tables, Emerald followed with another Sade song, Sweetest Taboo.

Among the artists that they have an affinity for are the soulful romantic, duos that were so influential in the '70s like Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, and the two of them united their voices in The Closer I Get to You and Where is the Love?

It was late in the evening and their final set, and the jazz content, though never absent, had gently faded as the atmosphere at ThreeSixty began to take on a romantic glow. The music, delivered sensitively, was a genuine addition to the atmosphere and the quality of performance was polished, stylish, and compulsive listening.

There are voices and then there are voices--sultry, sexy voices-that stay with you long after the song has ended. Emerald Jade has a voice that people have been waiting for; her voice is undoubtedly one of the most classic voices since Ella, Dinah, Billie and Sade, to hit the scene in recent history. Originally from Gary, Indiana now residing in Los Angeles, this mysterious stunning vocalist has created a buzz in the Urban Contemporary Jazz market, everybody wants to know, who is.... That!?! This recording is an instant classic and collectible worthy of being passed down from generation to generation. This release entitled "A NEW CLASSIC" is a collection of songs written by Emerald jade speaking about what she wanted in a relationship, unbeknownst to her became a reality while in the process of creating this album with the musical mastermind producer, Craig Monroe. Listening to this gem will treat the listener to a blend of jazzy pop, neo soul, and R & B, with catchy melodies capturing the joy, love, and happiness throughout the entire CD. The opening track "Vibe Queen" is a tribute to the queens before her, who made it possible for her to come along with her vibe. The second track "Delirious" has a guest vocal appearance by her now husband Craig Monroe; this track is about a couple having romantic evenings and endless afternoons with champagne, a bed of roses and a bubble bath. The third track "My Man", an unmistakable classic reminiscent of old school with the new; this is about a woman giving praise to her man who treats her like the queen she is. Track number six "Shine" is dedicated to her talented family of recording artists, "Jesse Powell", "Trina & Tamara" and upcoming soulful vocalist "Jacob Powell", this is where she tells them to "Shine" no matter what, and just keep your head up! On "Afternoon at Ricardo's" Emerald jade's voice is so captivating that you could hear a pin drop when the song is finished, this is definitely movie soundtrack material. This classic album is in the top ten for one of the greatest albums ever made!

It's a shame that Emerald Jade is not as known as she should be. I learned about Emerald online. She is an awesome artist. There's got to be a way to get her music in stores worldwide, I had a hard time finding it in stores but I will do my best to get the word out about her. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

  • Simply Superb
    author: Mac Daddy

Not much to say that hasn't already been said here, except I am not sure about whether I'd call it a jazz album more like jazz soul funk to my ears, that aside it's a great album. I love the new school old school groove she's got going on the album, some lovely trumpet work. This reminds me a lot of Roy Ayers work from the mid 70's such as the You Send me album, lots of his influences in there. She's great singer and the hubby isn't bad either and you can feel the love on this album. I hope she sells lots and lots, perhaps it's time to widen the distribution a little as it seems to be getting played in europe as well. Great album, well produced and well put together, I love it.

Although I am a life long fan of real soul music I find Nu Soul a little boring at times. However, if this album is Nu Soul then I am now a convert. This album has plenty of soul, it's in the groove and Emerald has a beautiful voice. The songs are performed and interpreted, not just belted out. Each nuance of each note is exact and the delivery is full of surprises. Is there a fault with this album? Yes. It's too damn short.

  • A great singer with a truly classic style !
    author: Dusty Groove America

A great singer with a truly classic style -- the sensual Emerald Jade, heard here in a strong debut set! Emerald has a style that recalls 70s work by Jean Carn and Phyllis Hyman -- a smooth, sophisticated approach to soul -- sung in a mature and loving manner, and set to modern arrangements that have some warm keyboards and lightly funky beats. The set's got a great crossover sound -- never too over the top, but slinky and soulful in just the right way.

  • A NEW DIVA, A NEW CLASSIC
    author: Raymond Redmond

We here at JazzUSA think that Emerald Jade's recent CD A New Classic should be considered for vocal jazz album of the year. This lady's got the feel and the flow that makes the music go! We recently caught up with Emerald for a quick moment of Q & A...(www.jazzusa.com)

    author: Soul Tracks

Emerald Jade and husband Craig Monroe were certainly making a bold statement by calling the album A New Classic, and they deliver. It is a very unique, sly, entertaining late night disc that will see a lot of time in my CD player. A nice and long overdue debut. [Read more at http://www.soultracks.com/emerald_jade.htm]

Great, mellow, relaxing! Very soothing, and "My Man" is tieless! Get this CD, it's very good!

  • I cannot recommend it enough !
author: Barry Towler/"SOUL EXPRESS" - Soul Music Magazine

.............My personal favourites, though are the bassy, bluesy "Delirious" featuring a duet with Craig Monroe and the excellent Fender Rhodes filled swayer, "Afternoon At Ricardo's". The latter is a very simple song, and I adore the keyboards used on this CD. This beautiful, beautiful song and the whole CD in fact, remind me of happier bygone days for real soul music and it is a pleasure to hear such melodies and lyrics. "My Man" is a fantastic jazz tinged smoky club affair with some tasteful muted trumpet and incidental scat vocals that are reminiscent of Manhattan Transfer at their best. More muted trumpet can be found on the sassy "Tippin'" which has our heroine displaying some softer qualities of the great Chaka Khan (one of her influences). "Tippin'" is a fine exponent of what we would deem funky jazz. Those peddling the tired smooth jazz format really do need to stop and take a listen to this CD. They could learn much from Emerald's style and delivery.

This cd kept my full attention from beginning to end. Emerald Jade's silky smooth voice had me messmerized! Her dynamic lyrics and jazzy sound is a sound that we have lacked for many years. There is certainly room for an artist of her caliber.

Emeralde Jade takes her voice and inflection's to where ever she desires with the ease of the old masters and with all the freshness of contemporary divas. The music is relaxing, introspective and reflective of our illustriuos, rich multi-faceted global music landscapes. The colors and rhythms are rich and the content is phenomenal.

  • This is a Must Have !
author: S.H. Watkins, Sr. / JazzUSA

Published in JazzUSA May 2004 S.H. Watkins, Sr. The title says it all. This is one of the smoothest, groovingest CDs I've come across this year. As soon as you put it on Vibe Queen hits you and hooks you with old school jazz scat crossed with funky jazz. Emerald Jade has one of those voices that was made for this kind of thing. Delirious is a sexy ballad with Emerald singing the front and the back, and it's so sweet you could get diabetic from just listening! There's also some nice guitar work by Troy Reigelman and vocal accompaniment by Craig Monroe, who is also co writer and producer of the CD as well as Emerald Jade's husband. Did I mention that this is an Indie production? Well, this is one of the best independent productions I have seen in all my years as publisher of JazzUSA. My Man slows it down a bit and overlays the sultry vocals with some timely trumpet lines from Eric Butler. Once again the strength of the track is in the quality of the songwriting and the skill of the delivery. Tippin' goes a little more uptempo and adds more funk to the bottom to tell a story of betrayal and disappointment. You Bring Joy To My Life is dedicated to her husband Craig on the back of the CD, and this is a JAM! The emotion is real. Emerald Jade brings a sassy style and great sense of musical timing to her music. I Found Love and Afternoon at Ricardo's round out this fantastic collection. This is a Must Have for your collection and a shoo-in for top-ten vocal jazz CD of the year in my book.
