A mosaic of resonant, soulful acoustic folk songs.

notes

Emily Picha's third album is a soaring westward journey with a vibrant cast of characters including swarthy sailors, pilgrims from faraway lands, and Los Angeles personified. In these 10 exquisite tracks, Emily Picha's rich and clear vocals make their home among the passing Badlands, lonely rest stops, and mountain meadows of the west.

The album has been described as "infectious bathtub folk" and "geo-folk" (playing off of Emily's penchant for geographic references).

Her guest instrumentation includes a haunting cello played by Brenna Sahatjian, a singing fluegelhorn played by Max Ribner, and the beautiful drumming of Nicholas Callaway.

From "16 Deadbolts," an anthem to pilgrims in foreign lands, to "The Sandy River," an song for the gushing rivers of our homelands, each song moves seamlessly into the next.

  • Can't stop

This album is the first thing I scroll to every time I turn on my I Pod at school. It helps me get through the day. :)

  • Listening wistfully

I so very much enjoy this CD. It's one of those that I don't ever take out of the player, but instead just listen to over and over again. I find myself making uncharacteristic attempts to sing along, simultaneously admiring and yearning for the kind of voice that Emily Picha has. Her laughter at the beginning of 16 Deadbolts warms my soul.

  • Good for the road

I'm not one of those people who listens to albums over and over again, but Westerly is SO amazing - I just don't get sick of it. I love Emily Picha's clear voice and her story telling makes me want to go on a journey to a foreign land. Plus, there's some stellar horn action on some of these tracks. It's always fun to know about a musician before they hit the big time - buy Westerly!

  • I love it

This album is definitely one of my top five favorites of the last six months. The beautiful lyricism and boisterous rhythms are not something you can just listen to once. Buy this album. I don't know where I would be without it.
