notes
ernie moved to austin in 2000, knowing little about the city or just how immersed in music one can be if they allow themselves the chance. since then, ernie has sustained a regular schedule of solo acoustic gigs, teaming up with the likes of WALTER TRAGER, JENNIFER ELLEN COOK, GRETAGOO, HILARY YORK, RICE MOOREHEAD, KARLA MANZUR, DOE MONTOYA, RUFUS MCGOVERN, SUZANNA CHOFFEL, and many other fellow songwriters. her songs are autobiographical and bittersweet, sometimes comedic and downright filthy, and her music has been deeply influenced by this city, her folks, her friends, and - yep, you guessed it - boys.
ernie released her debut solo album, a jester's life, with producer / collaborator britton beisenherz (RAMBLE CREEK STUDIO, MONAHANS/MILTON MAPES) in 2002 with little fanfare and an unbelievable ignorance in the actual "business" of music. it's still a damn fine record, with beisenherz playing most of the instruments along with john scully (formerly of DEADMAN) behind the drums, and a slew of guest appearances, including dave brittman (GALLAPAGOS,) steven collins (DEADMAN,) chris forshage (LARRY, GRASS,) warren hood and matt sleusher (SOUTH AUSTIN JUG BAND,) john pointer, tim gibbons, greg utay, and jess farr (THE ASTRONAUT SUIT.)
ernie's vocals also appear on MILTON MAPES' critically acclaimed "westernaire," BRIAN RUNG's "late for the show," DREW COWAN's "circus," KYLE WAYNE KUTSCHER's "don't want this to be goodbye," and MOONLIGHT TOWERS' latest release, "like you were never there," as well as appearing with SARATONE on "who and who," a who tribute album featuring austin artists, and with RUFUS MCGOVERN on "a miracle foundation christmas."
ernie finished recording both her sophomore release, "rabbit vs. fan," in 2005 with the ever changing cast of characters known as THE ACCUSERS at ramble creek studio, and a completely solo collection of demos, scratch tracks, and weird ideas entitled "the sketchy bunny e.p.," in her bedroom, living room, and anywhere her dogs didn't happen to be occupying.
most recently, she's finished up her latest e.p., "a scattered little mess," with fellow LOW STANDARDS partner in crime, josh hathaway (ASOGURASOR, THE ASTRONAUT SUIT, OCEANIC.)
if you ask ernie what kind of music she writes, she will shrug and say "chick rock," although she has no idea what the hell that really means. it's probably best categorized as folk; but she'd like to make clear that she is NOT a dirty hippie. most days.
in addition to her solo efforts, ernie also enjoys playing the side-man. she joined the DIAMOND SMUGGLERS as a "smugglette" shortly after her arrival in austin, and still shakes her ass for the love of neil. she was the bassist / co-front woman (along with GRETAGOO) in SOCK PUPPET, bassist / vocalist for THE AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL, and tries desperately just to keep up as the sometimes bassist / sometimes guitarist in austin's pop-punk band, SEXY FINGER CHAMPS. she was the vocalist for denton based hip-hop project, U ME AND A DJ, she holds down the low end in austin-based pyschedlic rock project, THE ASTRONAUT SUIT, and is one half of experimental noise outfit, THE LOW STANDARDS.
[ ernie would like to comment on how funny she thinks it is when people write about themselves in the third person... much like in this bio. ]

love it as much today as I ever did
author: k snowI first obtained this CD from a friend who lives in Austin after he took me to one of Ernie's shows in 2002. When I deployed to Iraq early in 2004, I took a handful of CDs with me, including A Jester's Life. The music was soothing and lovely and allowed me to relax and unwind after many long, difficult days. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a fire near the end of my tour. Back then, the CD wasn't available to purchase online - or if it was, I couldn't find it. I forgot about it for a while and stumbled across it on CD BABY recently while surfing the web. I love it today every bit as much as I did back then. This CD is timeless.
great CD!!!
author: mpopeThe best music, better than Norah Jones first CD. I think it should be on the radio.

first rate material
author: underground willieI don't know what this music is called, folk, rock, americana or blues but i love it. It may take a couple of plays to connect but the more you listen the more you will enjoy.
FABULOUS!!!
author: DaynaI had never heard of Ernie C. Ernst before (even though we're both from Texas!), and I bought this CD on a whim. I was absolutely blown away! She's one of the best new folk artists I've heard in a long time, and out of the 6 CDs I bought from CD Baby that day, this one is by far my favorite!
Nothing Foolish About A Jester's Life
author: KitFrom start to finish A Jester's Life was a kingly suprise. The album flows like a good book with the added bonus of a beautiful voice to tuck you in. The ebb and flow comes to a striking conlusion with the bluesy feel of Black Cat. Highly recommend it to the entire court.
A long awaited, smashing debut from the one and only Ernie c. Ernst
author: Regan BeisenherzThis album is a vacation away from the drab and overdone folk from the past. Ernie delivers a fine vocal and acoustic performance and a fresh look at the new direction and exposure the folk world has been waiting for.
