notes

More info to come but for now: "CURANDERO" means the healer and the music was conceived before it was "ok" for North American audiences to hear these sounds...originally composed and performed by Martin Espino on instruments he made. Everyone who hears it always says it is so relaxing. So, when you purchase it DON'T loan it out, you'll never get it back, hahahaha!!!

All the music is based on serious scholarly research.
Martin is of Mexican/Indigenous heritage(Tepehuano and Yaqui). This recording, originally released in 1985 is important because it is one the first ever to bring to North American audiences the sounds of the other part of Native America! Currently he is working on his next release due for 2003.

Martin also concieved of "InterActive Performance" back in the 1980's and now he does not only concerts but tours extensively to all kinds of schools/college where he motivates the audiences to interact with him by playing his percussion instruments.

ESPANOL:
• Excellent CD!!!
    author: L G Cantu

Most of the tracks have a mixture of sounds-Native and Central American. Track #7 and #10 have more of a Peruvian sound and Track #11 and #12 have more of an Afro-American sound. I loved it!!!

  • Great music, great sounds
    author: Luis

This is the first CD that I buy with this type of music and I am so glad that I did. The sounds produced by the musical wind instruments are beautiful and captivating. I especially like to listen to this CD when I go to sleep.

  • More AUTHENTIC than most similar CDs I've bought
    author: Mazedude

Very, very cool stuff. And it's all REAL. That's the big kick for me, having purchased several similar "native" and "ancient" CDs only to be disappointed by the use of keyboards, synths, and drum loops. Everything here is done with totally real instruments, and unique ones at that. Awesome. I think my only complaint would be wanting to hear more of certain sounds. There are some cool percussive/string instruments on Tracks 2 and 11 that don't really make appearances in any of the other tracks; I would've liked to hear more of them. Ah well, on the next CD I guess. :)

  • CURANDERO: Ceremonial Sounds and Life Stories of the Natural World
    author: Citlalin Xochime

With a vivid and diverse array of Prehispanic instruments and a primal talent for expressing ancient Native American rhythms, the ceremonial sounds and life stories of the natural world are captured in CURANDERO, a heroic, jubilant, and instinctive work of artisan Martin Espino. Descendant of Yaqui and Tepehuano ancestry, Martin Espino grew up alongside the rolling hills of Southern California where his interest in musical artistry blossomed at the age of 11-years-old. Initially, Martin developed his music talents by ear and later by a formal education in the breadth of classical studies. Eventually, his musical palette was enriched and enlivened with in-depth scholarly research and experiences with native inhabitants in the study of indigenous folklore and the ancient rhythms. Today, with more than 30 years experience in the art and craft of Prehispanic instruments, Martin Espino brings alive the flora and fauna spirits which transcend from the earthen habitats and colorful jungles of ancient Mesoamerica and the Amazon. CURANDERO is a celebration of Martin Espino's lifelong studies, expertise, and interactions with the music and instruments of the natural world and its native inhabitants. • Martin Espino is the real Curandero and traveled back in time to bring us this a
    author: Constance Tippett

Martin Espino is the real "Curandero", for he has seemingly traveled back in time to bring us this ancient music. As an art historian studying ancient cultures, this is a real treasure. When researching, I always try to imagine what the ancient people were thinking and feeling. Martin makes me realize that our ancestors are in us. We can call on them for inspiration and they will come.

  • These mesmerizing rythms relieve my urban stress
    author: C. Russell

It is difficult to find words to describe how this music makes me feef but I will try. When I am stuck in the office on a beautiful day, I listen to Martin's music and feel like I am in the forest. The rain stick, the flute and the hypnotic drumbeats chase away the stress and soothe my restless spirit.

  • Comments on,"Curandero" CD
    author: Dolores C. Manzanares

As an educator, I have used the CD in several ways: I have used it as a listening tool to teach my students music appreciation.I ask my students to close their eyes and to listen, carefully, to all of the musical sounds of the rhythms, flutes, drums and horn sounds. This is especially helpful to quiet the students down after recess and lunch. I will, then, ask the students to open their eyes and we conduct a class discussion on how the CURANDERO CD made them feel. some comments were that it made them feel calm and relaxed. Other comments were that the music is very soothing to their ears. The students were then asked to draw a picture of what they imagined as they listened to the CD. The results revealed some interesting drawings of forests, mountains, blue sky, white puffy clouds, deer, birds, Indians, waterfalls, rivers and streams. The last activity was to write about their drawing and how the music made them feel. I recommend this CD to everyone for a relaxing effect at home, car, nap time and especially for educators who want to teach music appreciation, imagery and relaxation to their students. This CD is also great for yoga classes. The CD has a multitude of uses and applications.
