"Upbeat funky rock that's guaranteed to get ya movin'". This is the phrase that most people would use to describe St. Louis, Missouri's Essence Of Logic. The group formed in November 2001. The band consisted of guitarist Dave Seithel, vocalist/guitarist Jeff Nations, bassist Dan Hunzeker, DJ-MAHF on turntables and drummer Adam Wiesehan. Composing songs that blended funk, rock, hip-hop, reggae and jazz, they hit the local scene in February 2002 and began quickly building a name for themselves. At the end of 2002, Brian Schaeffer was brought in to replace Wiesehan on the drums. From there they continued writing melodic upbeat songs with a funk edge and building up a reputable fan base through word of mouth and grassroots promotion. In 2003, E.O.L. released The Larry Elliot EP, a 3-song demo CD that helped them get their foot in the door at many of the Midwest’s finer venues and got their name and music on the radio. October 2004 saw the release of their debut full-length album entitled What’s The Story?. The album earned them even more radio play, slots on several compilations and a distribution deal with Blue Sky Distribution in St. Louis. Exactly a year later, the band decided to part ways with original bassist Dan Hunzeker in search of something more. They found that something in Drew Franklin, a St. Louis native who had had recent success with several local groups. It was a match made in heaven. Drew and the rest of the band hit it off immediately and began writing new material and brushing up on the old stuff. December 2005 saw the rebirth of the band. Having spent the subsequent months writing and practicing, they emerged a tighter, stronger and smarter band. The band has pulled out all the stops and are stopping at nothing to take their music, their dream, to the top.

The best funk/rock local band ever to hit St. Louis!
author: JackSome songs (such as Barely There, Swing It!, and Afraid of the Light) are perfect hard rock songs! Other songs (such as What's the Story? and Beautiful) have a sweet funky rythm! And still others (such as Two O'Clock Stumble and In the Summer) have slow, smooth melodies that put you in a more peaceful place! It's so well written and so well performed that it is better than any other local music that I've heard come out of St. Louis in a long time! IT ROCKS!!!

Grade: A Hailing from the St. Louis, Missouri area Essence of Logic has a knack for twisting and turning their music in just the right fashion producing all that they need to get their mood and message across to listeners. This disc starts off with the track “Barely There” and continues to flow until the last song “In The Summer”. Standout songs on here: “Swing It!”, “Afraid Of The Light”, and the title track “What’s The Story?”. If I had any objection to what E.O.L. is doing it would be that a couple of the songs are a tad bit too long. Of course I’m sure that they come across quite nicely in the band's live performances, which I hear are entertaining and packed full of energy. Actually after a couple listens you don’t really notice the length of the songs too much, but I think it might hurt if the group wanted to get those particular songs on radio for airplay. This 10-song disc is chocked full of heavy melodic rock that will remind you of bands like 311, Incubus and Phunk Junkies. Note: Check out an interview with Jeff from E.O.L. in Issue 23

The title of What’s The Story?—the debut from the St. Louis rockers Essence Of Logic—will likely leave wonderwalleyed anyone who lived through the alternative rock boom of the ’90s; I myself can’t read that title without mentally embellishing it with parentheses and the phrase Morning Glory, after the Oasis bestseller from 1995. That said, nothing on this ten-track “Shhh” Productions disc particularly recalls the work of Liam and Noel Gallagher, which some will take as a recommendation. What’s the Story? features an amiable, unprepossessing sonic mélange from bassist Dan Hunzeker, turntablist DJ Mahf, lead guitarist/singer Jeff Nations, percussionist Brian Schaeffer, and guitarist Dave Seithel. In places, Nations (who radiates rock-star presence live, by the way) sounds oddly like Gordon Lightfoot, of all people, and he and his four cohorts range across genres at will. By way of example, the title track opens in a hip-hop mode, goes pop, and then returns to hip-hop; similarly, the sixth song, “Beautiful,” features a funky groove. Nothing here will change most listeners’ lives, but the same could be said for 99.99 percent of music today.
