The Phantom of the Opera opened on January 26, 1988 at the Majestic Theatre in New York and is now the second longest-running show in Broadway history.

notes

The Phantom of the Opera opened on January 26, 1988 at the Majestic Theatre in New York and is now the second longest-running show in Broadway history. It likely will surpass another megahit musical and the current record holder at 7,485 performances, Cats. The composer of both these legendary musicals is Andrew Lloyd Webber. The lyrics to Phantom were penned by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and it is based on the novel, The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux.

The show is an unprecedented worldwide phenomenon. Phantom has played more than 65,000 performances in more than 20 countries around the world to close to 60 million people. Much of the success of the show has been attributed to the lavish scenery, the rich and romantic orchestral score, and the brilliant direction and vision of its director, Hal Prince. Not to be lost, however, are the incredible talents of the cast members, over 225 oustanding performers, in its first 17 years. The Broadway company has been blessed with some of Broadway's most outstanding actors and singers in the title role starting with the original Phantom and Tony award winner, Michael Crawford. Several of the Phantoms started in the company in other roles before moving on up to the title role. Some twenty plus performers have endured the tedious makeup process where prosthetics are carefully fitted, painted and glued to the Phantom's skin before donning two wigs, two radio microphones and a fiberglass mask. Following this grueling routine, the actor then sings one of the most vocally demanding roles written for Broadway all while burdened by the makeup and wigs, weighed down by the dramatically heavy costumes, sonically challenged by the mask, and impaired by the fog and smoke. A most challenging proposition by any definition, but these gentlemen have all managed to find their own unique way to make their respective Phantom special.

Many audience members never have the opportunity to see and hear this talented group of Phantom performers unencumbered by the many challenges of the Phantom role. They are a marvelous and brilliant collection of actors/singers with talents ranging across many styles and genres. This CD is a compilation of wonderful performances of the talented actors/singers who have played the Phantom. Several of these critically acclaimed artists have personally made their recordings, pictures and/or information available for this album. The material includes some of the greatest standards written including such classics as "All The Things You Are", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "I'll Be Seeing You", and "Ol' Man River". It is a simply marvelous collection of brilliantly talented performers singing wonderful songs, both old and new.

I was hesitant buying this cd as I already had most of the solo cds of these actors, but I bought it anyway. I am so glad that I did! The all of these songs are gems and the guys who sing them are very talented. My only complaints are that both Michael Crawford and Davis Gaines are highly talented singers, yet they chose odd songs of theirs to put on this cd, and it could have used more actors who have played the Phantom!

  • A lovely CD

Number three is a wonderful song-both the lyrics and singing were lovely. I also want to compliment Old Man River-it absolutely sent chills up my spine. Great CD!

This is a GREAT CD. I think it is an honor to choose all of the fabulous phantoms to be heard on one CD. Steve Barton's interpretation of "I've Got You Under My Skin" was so full of emotion and he has the voice of an angel. Thank you for making this CD possible. I highly recommend it!

  • Very sweet CD!

It was really very interesting to hear the voices of all these different interpreters of the Phantom, which where very different from each other! Over all a nice, sweet compilation that puts you in a good, comfy mood.

Nice to have a compilation of these great Phantoms. Gary Maurer, Hugh Panaro, and Howard McGillin were superb!! Brad Little and Davis Gaines did well, but I was sort of disappointed in the other tracks. It's worth it, though, and benefits a great cause (BCEFA)!

  • This is a really awesome CD. Especially for a Phantom Phan.

This CD is awesome. I was giddy when it arrived. I'm a huge Phantom fan and this CD included tracks from all of the Phantom's I've seen live. I loved all of the tracks, especially Hugh Panaro's "We're Already There". It's such a sweet little song and he sings it beautifully. Gary Mauer is another favorite. His voice is a very powerful one and does it just blew me away. Surprizingly, the only song on this CD that didn't really impress me was Michael Crawford's track. It just didn't do his voice any justice, and as the original Phantom, they could have chosen a better song for him. Even with that considered, it was interesting to hear a younger Crawford sing. He's sort of between his Hello Dolly and Phantom days in this track, so that in itself redeems the song. I highly recommend this CD to any fan. I really enjoy listening to it. It really is a pleasure.
