notes

"Wearing This Life" is not only the title of Gainesville, Florida's Fifth Year Crush first full-length release, it is the state of affairs with members Jason Walls (vocals/guitar), Guy Nicolette (electric guitar/vocals), and Kevin King (drums). The band doesn't just talk about music, or put on "stage personas". The life they've chosen is literally worn every day. And this record offers a glimpse of this life - a gamut of musical and lyrical inspiration from the straight ahead rock single "Devastated," to the melodically hooky, pop-rocker "Madison," through the alt-country infused "Next Fall," the softly tragic "Hollywood Ending," all the way to the emotionally charged "Waiting Room."

Their previous accomplishments include opening for such acts as Dishwalla, Sister Hazel, FeFe Dobson, Ashlee Simpson, Lenny Kravitz, the Indigo Girls, Sugar Ray, Our Lady Peace, Sheryl Crow, Goo Goo Dolls; selection for national sponsorships through Budweiser (True Music) and Amp Energy Drink (Mountain Dew); charted #1 on Alternative Addiction.com's Unsigned Top Ten; selection as one of only 200 bands nationwide to participate in the 2002 Jim Beam Rock Band Search and being named "Band of the Week March 13th, 2002"; invitations to showcase at numerous industry conferences (the New Nashville Music Conference, the 2002 Axis Florida Music Festival, 2002 EAT-M Conference in Las Vegas, NV.); being featured on numerous compilation releases and recently in an independent film ("A Joyce Story" by Pete Guzzo);

While reminiscent of Toad the Wet Sprocket/matchbox twenty/Nine Days, Fifth Year Crush are establishing themselves as part of the next generation of song-driven rock. Fifth Year Crush recorded "Wearing This Life," at the A Room in Atlanta, GA, spending three weeks in early 2003 with renowned producer Don McCollister (Indigo Girls, Sister Hazel, Shawn Mullins). With it's release, Fifth Year Crush is poised to build upon its success as one of the Southeast's best bands.

  • Very Good
    author: Jason

I'd say over all it's a very good CD, I personally don't think it matches up to the likes of Nine Days or MatchBox 20 but its still a damn good CD. The opening track is probably my favourite with the chorus hook just being so damn catchy! So yeah, well done, a definate thumbs up.

I love this CD, definitely one of my favorites. After seeing this band live and buying this CD, it's been in my stereo ever since. "Devastated" gets stuck in my head for hours! lol. My favorites are "Next Fall", "Waiting Room" and "Leaving Atlanta" (such sad lyrics and sound). Can't wait for another release. Don't regret ever buying this CD.

Reminiscent of like-minded song-driven, pop-oriented rock acts such as Matchbox Twenty, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Vertical Horizon, Fifth Year Crush's sound leaves more on the modern rock scope of things. It has plenty of plentiful beats and rock guitar, however like their contemporaries, they leave plenty of room for sing-along choruses, coupled with unforgettable hooks, making it easy to digest, sing-along too, and enjoy in numerous situations. If you're looking for something that is both infectious and lyrically-driven, this is a cup of tea that will be served hot and delightful.

If you havent listened to this CD yet, it is a must hear. It includes both up beat songs and relax mellow songs. The CD is amazing and I recommend it to everyone

  • A favourite already
    author: Dave Gough, England

Two or three listens and already this cd is fast becoming a favourite. Catchy, well written songs. Two problems. 1: This band will never get played in England cos our charts suck. 2: The length of the album leaves you wanting more - perhaps not a problem but a marketing ploy. Anyway...fantastic album!!!

  • Buy this CD
    author: Matt

This is a great debut CD by FYC. Each song on the CD has something good about it. There is not one song that I don't like. My favorites are Devistated and Next Fall. If you like Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls, or just good rock music in general, buy this CD!

  • awesome CD! one of my faves I bought this year!
    author: Karen

This CD is without a doubt one of the best I've bought this year. Fifth Year Crush is gonna make it big soon. This CD def proves their talent. I love all the songs on the CD but especially Devastated, Madison, Next Fall, and All Comes Down to Now. I found out about this band through the Alternative Addiction site. I'd never heard of them prior to that, but after listening to "Devastated", then listening to other samplers on their site, I knew I had to buy this CD. Def worth my money. Fifth Year Crush kicks ass! :)

  • This band plays in the same league as Nine Days,Splender and Third eye blind
    author: Kaj Roth

From Gainesville,Florida comes this hooky pop/rocking act Fifth year crush which plays in the same league as Nine Days,Splender and Third eye blind´s first album but FYC aren´t as good, this quartet feels a bit too light compared to the real teachers of this softer modern rock genre namely the bands above. "Weaering this life" is not bad in any way,the songs feels real catchy and the opening track "Devastated" could´ve been a hit if it was released back in 98 but now it feels like we´ve heard it a dozen times before. "Burn" has a warm melody and is the best one on this band´s debut,Matchbox 20 class if you ask me. Vocalist Jason Walls doesn´t have the same strong voice as Stephan Jenkins in 3EB but Jason is a good lyricist which he shows in the tragic "Hollywood ending". What I miss is the strong refrains that bands like Nine Days and Splender are so good at,when songs like "Blinded" and "Madison" on this album just passes by without notice,I´d rather have something that binds me to the music.....however I know one moment "Wearing this life" will do just fine,-The day after if you know what I mean, good for a hangover ohyeah! Soft and calm they are: Fifth year crush.
