notes
We were inspired by many of the agreeable greats of the Folk, Country, and Americana genres. Our favorite chords are C, F, and G. So, if you’d like to play along, well, it’s that easy.
Of our infamous families, the two of us had been the musical holdouts until we gave into the force and began writing and playing music together. Armed with a ukulele and a guitar, we penned songs such as ‘Shit Makes the Flowers Grow’, ‘Knock Me Up’, and ‘Motherfucker Got Fucked Up’ and we thought, “What a crime it would be to keep these national treasures to ourselves. How can we keep silent when we are the voice of a nation?”
You may not hear us on the radio, since our songs have been described as “inappropriate”, “off-color”, “not ready for mainstream” and “NSFW”(Not Safe For Work).
Our debut EP, 'Folk Uke', is self-titled, as are we. It was produced by Abe Guthrie and ourselves. "Family values" would be the common chord in this unprecedented collection of songs, since we let our Dads, Willie Nelson and Arlo Guthrie, take the solos and chime in when they were compelled to do so. It was the least we could do for our executive producers. It made them feel good and that made us feel good; so we took the chance that it would make thousands of people feel good and we printed thousands of copies.
We sure hope you'll buy one, or ten, or even twenty...
Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson

“Folk Uke, (self-titled, self-released): The KAOS Music Department's favorite album of the year; one listen and you'll know why. Amy Nelson and Cathy Guthrie lay down eight tracks of sometimes naughty, sometimes obscene, and always pretty, ukulele-driven folk. Amazing harmonies abound in songs like "Tonight You Belong to Me" and "Knock Me Up." A nightmare for the Parent's Music Resource Center but a dream come true for fans of downright beautiful music.” - by Bryan Johnson & Ben Kennedy, KAOS Student Music Directors

"Take a pinch of Guthrie, a twist of Nelson, a couple ukuleles, some Mighty Wind, and estrogen supplements. Now mix all the ingredients together with a mortar and pestle, sit back and tell the world, Folk Uke! This debut self-release from Amy Nelson and Cathy Guthrie features eight uke-infused, traditionally harmonized girls bathroom masterpieces ranging from “Sh☺t Makes the Flowers Grow”, to “Motherf☺cker Got F☺cked Up”. Their folk roots show through choice repertoire arrangements of the David Lee/Billy Rose classic “Tonight You Belong To Me”, and Johnny Cash/ Roy Cash Jr. tune “I Still Miss Someone. Folk music needs a good laugh, regularly. Daily, really. Humor is the best part about folk music, the twist of the lyric when it’s nearly limerick verse. With an overtone of natural female harmony, simple strum-strum room mic intimacy, and some proud fathers Arlo and Willie swapping leads and background vocals, this is likely to be the best folk record out today, and I’m not folking around here." - Matt Reasor, American Songwriter Magazine

Absolutely Brilliant!
author: alex winnerI am so glad I stumbled onto Folk Uke... I first heard them a month ago, completely randomly, on Sirius. I was immediately floored, with their vocal ability, common-sense lyrics, and great ukulele-backed sound. These girls really know how to deliver some -- otherwise disturbing -- lyrics in a sing-song manner that just makes me want to be happy, regardless of what they're singing about. The addition of Willie & Arlo as supporting musicians goes even an extra step to put this one over the top! My only question is, when are they going to put out another album?!?
Folk Uke
author: Ray BoylanBefore I begin, let me express a prejudice - I am a huge fan of their daddies. Now I am a huge fan of their's. This CD combines whimsey, humor and drop dead harmony - I LOVED IT!!!
What would their daddies say?
author: Charlie Tucker of KaivalyAt first listen, you laugh and wonder aloud, "Damn, what would their daddies say?!?" But their daddies are right there on the album with them so it's all gotta be good. And it is. Both vocals and music are simply wonderful. And, well, girls that cuss this sweetly give me a hard-on!
Ashley hearts Folk Uke
author: Ashley HarbisonI love it. Raelyn Nelson-Sweeney turned me on to Folk Uke... and I am SO glad. I actually just got my very own ukelele... who knows, maybe one day I will pen a few "off color" songs inspired by you! Oh, and CD Baby Rocks too.
Really glad I "stumbled" on to this cd.
author: Noel JohnsonGreat songs, great playing and (in parts) VERY funny! Looking forward to the next one!
Stumbled into this CD
author: DougActually StumbleUpon'd into the site. Fell in love with the singing flowers and bought the CD. I'll be buying several more copies for family members. Everybody who's heard the Makes the Flowers grow loved it. I love the way the songs work at multiple levels: pop/folky happy tune, lyrics that are funny on the surface, and totally serious underneath. GREAT!
Wonderful funny but totally articulated Ululele CD.
author: Tommy SheridanI loved the make up of all of this CD.The arrangement of 'Tonight You Belong To Me'is top drawer. The Ululele-I am a uke nut--backing and playing is wonderful.
Great 60s folk transplanted to the 21st Century
author: 21st Century Hippy MusicI loved Arlo's stuff in the 60s, especially Alice and the Motorcyle Song, and only later discovered Willie. They both are extremely talented musicians. It is always nice to see children of musicians of this caliber trying to make their own name. When those children also have a wonderful, eccentric sense of humor, their music is quite often even better than their parents. I love this CD. Not only are the girls talented singers and competent guitarists/uke players, they also have this wonderful, nearly obscene, way of viewing the world that makes their music so much fun to listen to. I hope they both achieve the same fame their fathers did. If they don't, it's because the audience has lost its community sense of humor.
Like father(s) like daughter(s)

God Awfull Good!!!
author: Curtiss deVedrine "The Second Coming Of Age"These Singers will break your heart while making you laugh out loud!
While the songs with the controversial lyrics will get the most attention
author: cmurfIt has been said that it you have had a bad week in the world the song to sing is Leadbelly's "On a Monday." I would suggest that if you don't want to wait for an entire week to go bad the song to sing the moment things go awry is the second cut on Folk Uke's CD the name of which shall remain nameless since this is a "family" review. While the songs with the controversial lyrics will get the most attention, the non-controversial tunes such as Try to Say Goodbye, Fences, and In Case we Die are wonderful and equally worth a listen. Play these tunes on your iPod in the car and passengers are going to first ask, "what did they say?" and then say "play it again."
Brillant. Thoughtful. Rebellious. Twisted. Sugar and spice.
author: GinaBrillant. This is off center and a breath of fresh air in the midst of our cloudy airwaves. What we have here is magic brought to us by angel voices and talented songwriting. I recommend this album to anyone with ears. Thoughtful, provoking, rebellious and twisted. Sugar and spice.
Outstanding! Angelic with a twist,.
author: IRVANAI love it! These girls are truly talented. Thier simplicity brings you back to the Carter Family however their lyrics do not. You have to have a sense of humor to fully enjoy this cd.
