  • enthralling and engrossing

When I first heard Singular Intent, my initial reaction was, "Where has Fran Gray been all my life?" Her CD is both enthralling and engrossing and it is surprising that more hasn't been heard from her already. Her songs convey powerful and insightful storylines that are over-shadowed only by her remarkable voice. I highly recommend this album

By way of Chicago, Portland songwriter Fran Gray keeps her music honest like a hard days work and tastey like a cold drink at the end of that day.-Randy Sanders

  • Review of Singular Intent.
    author: Hipfish Magazine

Gray has been receiving rave reviews in PDX and on internet music magazines. Her album, Singular Intent, has been getting airtime on radio stations as far away as Australia and Belgium, from New York across the country to our own humble little corner of the world on KMUN, Astoria and KBOO in P-town. Gray's singular intent is to entertain you with thoughtful lyrics backed up by her artful guitar playing (both acoustic and electric). Her influences are diverse, from Sarah McLachlan to Jimi Hendrix, and Chicago jazz legend, Jethro Burns, whom she studied under. Her varied musical tastes are well displayed on Singular Intent, which is her third recording and was funded by The Oregon Arts Commission and The National Endowment for the Arts. Gray refers to her alterna-pop songwriting as "a kaleidoscope of sound," and it is her knack for combining different musical traditions that makes Singular Intent a good listen, full of surprising variations. The first two tracks off the CD, "In Your Room" and "Erica," have a bit of a Shawn Colvin feel to them, and it is easy to imagine Gray sharing a stage at Lilith Fair with other folk/pop divas on the strength of these songs alone. The guitar work on "Smokin Tongue" definitely pays homage to Hendrix, in nice, subtle way. "Blues Stay Away From Me," is a soulful, bluesy cut with excellent vocal harmonies. Gray states that she and her music have "traveled the genre highway," since she discovered that music was her life, at the tender age of ten. Singular Intent is a great fusion of the musical map she has trekked through, masterfully blending different traditions. -Abby Banduragga
