notes
Fran Guidry's debut CD, Kaleponi, features original and traditional Hawaiian slack key solo guitar instrumentals. After playing old time rock'n'roll for 20 years, Fran experienced a musical rebirth when he turned on the TV in a Waikiki hotel room. He saw and heard Keola Beamer playing slack key, and he fell in love with Hawaiian music at that moment. Since then Fran has immersed himself in slack key and Hawaiian music. He has collected CDs and LPs, attended concerts, studied books and videos, taken lessons, and played slack key guitar nearly every spare minute. He has performed at various venues around the San Francisco Bay Area, in solo shows and as an opener for Hawaiian music stars like Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui, and Patrick Landeza. He has also played with masters like Ledward Ka`apana, Mike Ka`awa, and Kevin Brown on his trips to Hawai`i.
Slack key guitar is a folk style that demonstrates the beauty and power of simplicity. Created over 150 years ago by Hawaiian cowboys herding cattle on volcanic slopes, it has endured and grown, inspiring new devotees generation after generation. Now this charming music seems to have transcended the boundaries of its island home, with slack key guitarists blossoming all across the mainland of the United States, in Japan, and in Europe.
Slack key seems to capture listeners like magic. The stresses and strains of the fast paced modern world fade as the ebb and flow of slack key transports them to that idyllic island paradise locked in their imagination. Like the traditional Hawaiian songs, Fran's originals are inspired by personal relationships, joyous life events, and the wonders of the world around us.

sweet guitar
author: Chuck CheesmanI just received this CD today and popped it in before sitting down to dinner. This CD goes very well with pizza. In fact, I bet it would go well with pasta or fish too. (Maybe not with liver, nothing really goes well with liver.) In all seriousness, this is a wondeful CD. Fran's playing is clean and dynamic. The guitars have a beautiful tone. If you're a slack key fan this CD will make a great addition to your collection, and if you're not familiar with Hawaiian Slack Key music this will be the perfect introduction to a very sweet style of guitar playing! Way to go Fran!

Two were purchased one is kept in the car and the other in the house and is played at dinner parties. Both my parents loved the music and are very happy with the purchase. Kerry Morris.

A first rate guitar album.
author: GuyIf you have the Dancing Cat cd's you will love this one. I particularly like song number eleven. Great songs in all.
Very relaxing. It makes you think about getting away from it all.
author: Ikaika BrownIn my opinion it's a great album. I think you did a good job on the mixing. And that guitar!! What a great sounding guitar. I like the originals mixed in w/ some familiar tunes, good idea. I think this album could help draw more poeple to join us in the slack key world. Nice job Fran...
Fine example of Slack-key guitar
author: Raf SeibertFran Guidry has produced a fine recording of a variety of Hawai'ian slack-key guitar. This traditional music of the islands is refreshingly different from most other guitar instrumental music and different from other open tuning styles. Fran has immersed himself in this genre and learned much from the island's masters of the music. It has only been the last few decades that the keepers of these musical traditions have made the details of their music available to any outside their families. The recent opening of these hidden musical treasures has made possible Fran's fine synopsis. Since I received my copy, I've been listening to it over and over. The rhythms and harmonies are captivating.
Good first CD for Fran
author: Terry BeckhelmTop notch engineering and Fran is a gifted player. I'd like to see him expand his song list beyond traditional tunes and originals (read: no royality hassles), although I appreciate his motivation. I hope that with encouraging sales and reviews that he'll do another one, the licensing and royalities vaguaries not withstanding.
