Pedal steel-guitar for those who occasionally wish to listen to melody rather than improvisation or vocals....some easy-listening country and swing tunes that go well with the hectic commute from work or with the days final cup of coffee.

notes

Gene started playing the steel-guitar because most of the musicians he knew played a standard guitar or a fiddle and he wanted to learn something different. After graduation from high-school his first full-time job was playing steel guitar for the "Rogers Twins and the Prairie Sons" western-swing band in Amarillo, Texas.

Gene later joined the U.S. Army to fulfill his military obligation. While in the Army he met a singer/guitar player named Harold Jenkins and they established a band named "The Cimmarons" and performed together for two years on the military club circuit in the Tokyo/Yokohama area of Japan. After the Army Gene also played steel-guitar in Harold Jenkin's band "The Lonely Blueboys" after he had changed his name to Conway Twitty.

Gene toured with the Merl Lindsay Ozark Jubilee Band; was a staff musician on the Henson Cargill TV Show; and played steel guitar with many other country artists during his career.

Gene had never recorded his own music until recently and this CD is his second release. It includes three of Gene's original songs, "Just Pedaling", "Mama's Baby Boy", and "Easy Does It". His first album, "JUST FOR ME", was recorded in 2002.

Visit Gene's website for more information. He can be contacted by e-mail from his guestbook.

I am not an expert at critiqueing music and the players who perform their music, but I have to compliment Gene on his latest album, "Steel Guitar". Although I have heard his selections played many times by other fine steel players, his easy going style comes through and his playing is excellent. Great Job Mr. Jones. You received 6 stars from Casey Reynolds and Jody Carver!

WOW!! That's my review in one word. Gene, my good buddy, you never cease to amaze me. What a pleasant surprise when I popped this one in my CD player. Man, I wish I'd of had your rendition of "Bootheel Drag" years ago. I most certainly would have chosen it as my theme song for my radio broadcasts, A better version, I can't remember. My friend you make that Carter walk the walk, and talk the talk ! I especially liked your original tune, "Mama's Baby Boy", and I can almost see your nimble fingers fly as I listen to "Just Pedaling". Haunting memories of Bob Wills abound as"Faded Love" drifts from the speakers. I can feel your love of our revered instrument as you give tribute to "Mansion On The Hill" The versions of "San Francisco", "Jersey Bounce", and "Danny Boy", show your versitility and are soooooo easy on the ear. I heartily suggest that all Steel fans give this one a listen. Oh by the way, it also goes well with that first cup of coffee my friend ! I'm prejudiced but i give this one ****1/2 stars, out of 5 !! Excuse me while I go listen again.
