notes

Philadelphia’s own Gina Sicilia began singing at the age of three and hasn’t stopped since. Exposed to music early on by her parents, Gina grew up listening to Doo-Wop and the music of the 50’s & 60’s. Upon hearing blues legend Bobby Bland for the first time at the age of 14, she was instantly enthralled by the raw emotion and power of blues & soul. After years of polishing her vocal and songwriting skills, she began singing in clubs around the Philadelphia area, and began performing at such acclaimed venues as Warmdaddy’s, Steel City Coffee House, AJ’s Blue Thursdays, Scotland Yard and the Bluetone Café. More than just a throwback to the great blues & soul vocalists of the 50’s & 60’s, Gina uniquely separates herself from the pack of current vocalists with a style that is neither forced nor cliché.

Now 21, this soulful, passionate blues vocalist and songwriter has just completed her debut album. Entitled “Allow Me To Confess”, this project had been a long time in the making. The record is a reflection of Gina’s diverse musical talent and tastes, and of the years she spent honing her vocal chops and songwriting skills. The album consists of eleven soul-stirring tracks, eight of which were written by Gina herself. “Allow Me To Confess” was produced by 2007 Blues Music Awards Nominee, Dave Gross, who also lends his own guitar playing to the mix. Backed by a cast of some of the finest in the business, Gina’s powerful vocal delivery and range command the attention of the listener throughout the entire album, with a conviction not found in many other artists. Having already shared the stage with such notables as Steve Guyger, Arthur Neilson, Dennis Gruenling and Peter Karp, among many other blues & roots heavyweights, Gina has developed a confidence and competence that belies her age.

As a songwriter, Gina has proven herself to have a deep understanding of American roots music, as well as the ability to compose music that perfectly suits her unique persona. Her expertly crafted songs pay homage to the great roots music of the past, which has inspired Gina throughout the years, and now comes full circle to help her create her own distinct voice in this American art form.

Gina’s potential as a vocalist and songwriter is boundless. She is sure to make her mark among a new generation of blues artists.

Many artists need a life-time of experience to focus all their talent and musical maturity in this one very special album, their definitive. Gina Sicilia has done something unbelievable, she achieved this unique point with your debut CD, one of the best records I’ve heard in recent years. Her voice is so beautiful, smooth as silk and very sexy; cover songs are well chosen and her self-penned tunes equal those by famous songsters; the music itself and production of the CD are of the highest order. Absolutely great album recorded by a full-grown artist, a musical heaven.

  • The Blues is Alive and Well and Gina Sicilia is Proof!

The President of our Society and I were discussing the upcoming March 8th Dave Gross show at Big Cities Lounge in Rockford when he said to me, “You have to hear this CD I got from Dave’s label Swingnation.” So we popped “Allow Me to Confess” into the stereo and went though all 11 tracks. I sat there listening, reading the liner notes and I was very impressed. Hell, I was more than impressed. Here was a 21 girl from Philadelphia, profoundly singing with a superb voice and the conviction of a much older woman. Here was a 21 year old songwriter who penned 8 great tunes with really touching lyrics. Here was an immensely talented young woman who is going to make a huge impact on the blues world. Every year the blues world seems to focus on the next young guitar whiz. How often do we hear, “He’ll be the next Stevie Ray Vaughn” at festivals and shows? I usually laugh a bit and just shake my head. Well, here with Gina I found myself saying, “Here we have the next generation of Etta James and Ruth Brown.” She’s that good. So one has to ask why a nice Italian girl from the City of Brotherly Love is singing the blues. She grew up listening to 50’s and 60’s doo wop and at 14 Gina heard Bobby Bland where she became fixated on the blues. She perfected her style in area clubs and has been writing songs for a few years that culminated in this debut CD. Her style is uniquely her own; she comes across as both relevant and sincere. The topics she writes and sings about are timely and timeless. From the young girl struggling with self esteem and other emotions of youth in “One of Many” and the title track to passionate tunes like “Try Me” and “You Set My Heart On Fire,” Gina delivers the goods. Her voice ranges from low and sultry tones to some downright power where she can belt it out with the best of them. You will be thoroughly amazed and entertained by this CD from the opening bars of “That’s a Pretty Good Love” to the final cut “When My Ship Comes In.” Backing her up on guitar is 2007 Blues Music Award nominee Dave Gross, who also produced the album. Dave’s band members Scot Hornick (upright bass) and Mike Bram (drums) also provide a clean backdrop for the CD. I strongly urge you to go out and invest in this fine CD by a great new artist– you won’t be sorry you did!

  • Fresh and exciting new Female Blues Singer
    author: Nancy

Clearly, there are not so many out there, who sing Blues and capture your ear and heart. This CD is so refreshingly different from the usual singer/songwriter/popstuff, and is shows the great potential of Gina´s singing and songwriting capabilities! It works without big orchestration - less is more and always enough here, and you dont have to be a blues lover to love the CD!

  • Seriously good vocalist, I strongly recommend you check out Gina Sicilia!
