notes

When people find out we have a CD they always ask, "What kind of music is it?" As if I could say "Green" or "Striped" and give them an immediate mental picture.

If I say "Pop" we could include both Britney Spears and Sade.
(I've always wondered how P.M. Dawn answers that question...)

And so have we, after hundreds of cocked heads at our sputtering attempts at self classification, decided on "Elegant Pop Hop".

The music is plush, soulful, sophisticated, and catchy.
How many times have I had "Sticky girl" stuck in my head?

So who are we? Lis is the VOICE(my caps), lyrics writer, composer of melodies, programmer of many seemingly mind-altering-substance-induced funky synth & drum lines, the flute player, and art director.

Having been born and raised in Kalamazoo (anybody remember that Glenn Miller song? Didn't think so), graduated from Alma College and Western Michigan University, and shoveled at least 100 times her body weight in snow, she then fled the country in '96 to start a home recording studio with her spiritual tag team partner: Germán F.

The fact that said studio was actually started in '98 makes little difference to our story.

Which brings us to Germán F.

Mystery and polemics swirl around this Stick player, Bass player, guitar player, and recording engineer...such as "Did George Martin REALLY give him his diploma?" We have pictures.

Aside from massive musical dexterity, he is also responsible for big, majestic, Tears For Fears-style song endings (whaddya want, he was born on the same day as Roland) and correct spelling.

Hailing from Joyuda, Puerto Rico, this kittycat has studied in Berklee, from where he even dared to graduate (meow!); and has recorded many artists in the previously mentioned Caribbean island and in Madrid. He has also appeared on Spanish TV as a coy and sexy bass player.

"How the heck does he PLAY that thing?" That would be the Stick, and for the one time in my life, I will quote a super model who was asked how she walked in those five inch heels: "If I stopped to think about it, I probably couldn't do it".

Personally, I think he plays it just for the wide eyed, open mouthed stares that he gets from mere mortal guitar players, but that's just my opinion.

Many lifetimes of practice is our first CD, but there will be more.

If you insist, our songs are orange, sparkly and fairly luminescent.

I wouldn't rule out the odd cornflower blue, or even a frill here and there, but all aesthetically pleasing.

Anyway, that's the palette we have to work with with Lis' voice.

Which is another thing.

And I mean that.

I like to think of Annie Lennox singing a Sade song mixed by Everything But The Girl...that alone should take you days to figure out.

It did us.

Lis, 2001
