notes

Glass House was formed in 1989 as a songwriting partnership between Mark Vickness and David Worm. Their first CD, Why Follow, was released in 1995. In addition to Vickness (guitars, percussion) and Worm (vocals), the CD featured bassist Kai Eckhardt (John McLaughlin Trio, Steve Smith) and drummer M.B. Gordy (Frank Zappa, Aaron Neville). Why Follow was widely acclaimed and aired extensively on Bay Area radio stations.

The songs on Why Follow favored large arrangements including lots of keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, drums, percussion, electronic percussion, vocal harmony, etc. A few years after Why Follow was released, Glass House refashioned itself into an acoustic group utilizing only vocals, vocal percussion, acoustic 6 and 12-string guitars, violin, bass and hand percussion instruments.

The result - heard on their 2001 release, Questions, is new acoustic music - original songs blending folk, jazz, funk and celtic elements with Indian, African and Latin percussion. Questions features:

Chad Clouse/violin (Mike Marshall, Michael Manring)
David Belove/bass (Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie)
Ty Burhoe/tabla (Zakir Hussein, Kitaro)
M.B. Gordy/percussion (Frank Zappa, Aaron Neville)
Brian Rice/percussion (the Native Suns, Orquesta La Moderna Tradicion).

The group is based in Oakland, California.

BIOGRAPHIES:
MARK VICKNESS
A composer by training, Mark has written, produced and performed in a wide range of styles over a period of roughly twenty-five years. His formal training includes a bachelors degree in music from Clark University where he graduated with high honors in music as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree in composition from the California Institute of the Arts where he studied with Pulitzer Prize winner Mel Powell.

His compositions range from classical to jazz to world music, from solo instrumental pieces to ballets to full orchestral works including a Concerto for Tabla and Orchestra premiered at the California Institute of the Arts with John Bergamo as soloist.

Mark has been performing as a guitarist for roughly thirty years having played and studied rock, jazz, classical and folk guitar. His outlook on the guitar changed radically a few years ago when he heard Michael Hedges perform in San Francisco at what, tragically, turned out to be Michael's last San Francisco performance. Since then, Mark has focused exclusively on 6 and 12-string acoustic guitar using original tunings, harmonics and percussive techniques in the context of writing, recording and performing songs with Glass House.

DAVID WORM
David began his singing career in 1985 with the Bay Area groups Jazz Mouth and Vocal Front. In 1989 he became a founding member of Bobby Mcferrin's Voicestra and has remained a regular performer with Mcferrin, being featured on recordings, videos and touring with the quartet, Hard Choral and Mcferrin's most recent project, Circlesongs.

David has recorded on over thirty CDs including recordings with Carlos Santana and Kenny Loggins. He is one of the founding members of the acappella group, SoVoSo, which has released three albums and tours internationally. David has worked extensively with the Bay Area Dance community having scored or co-written original works for ODC, Robert Moses Kin (this work being a recipient of an Isadora Duncan Award), Tandy Beal and Suzanne Gallo.

I love this CD! The richness of vocals, music and lyrics is a treat for both the ears and soul. I highly recommend a listen to this up and coming group. I can't wait for the next release.
