notes

From Albuquerque, NM USA

With the many thousands of rock groups out there, it is discouraging how identical many of them sound, having to explain themselves as a cross between this band and that. The Albuquerque-based group GoMotorCar rebukes the overdone concepts of what is expected from a rock-n-roll band and takes their music in an incomparable direction.

The members of the band are veterans of the Albuquerque rock scene and formed GoMotorCar in August of 2000 to break the conventional formula of verse/chorus, verse/chorus with a unique indie/gothic/post-rock sound. Their dark, ethereal, yet catchy sound relies on dynamic changes, switches in time signature and unpredictable lyrical routes to keep audiences captivated and intrigued. Lenny D'Wayne and Johnny Cassidy share lead vocals and guitar duty, while Roger T. Apodaca (bass/keyboard) and Dagmar Andrews (drums, percussion) comprise the rhythm section.

The result of this collaboration has been their nine-track debut album entitled "Thanks For Sharing My Head", their 6 song CD-EP "When I Feel ----- Sometimes I -----" released Jan 25th, 2002 - less than a year after the release of their debut full length. And their latest 2003 release, the 15-song full length endeavor titled "True Tonight". The new album is already being praised in the local press. The Albuquerque Journal music columnist Kevin Hopper dubbed it "the best local release of 2002" since it was released in Albuquerque on Dec 27th, 2002. The band is considering it a 2003 release however. All albums are released with Albuquerque's leading indie label Socyermom Records (www.socyermom.com).

Throughout the new CD, D'Wayne's magnetic and domineering voice complements Cassidy's higher register reflective and spiritual tone. Roger T. Apodaca also lends his vocals as lead on two tracks while upholding the rhythm section with the capable Dagmar Andrews.

The combination of these diverse personalities creates distinct moods on each song. GoMotorCar can express a haunting intensity and switch to orchestrated distortion and forceful rhythms within the confines of a song. With gothic overtones, the group is not afraid to build up or collapse a song at any time. In short, each song is its own entity. GoMotorCar's stage presence is as equally engaging. Dressed in all black, the band's rough and tumble appearance fits well in the bars and clubs they play along Route 66. Using only red lights, the "black collar" foursome puts forth artistic and emotional performances, challenging audiences with their mature sound. In any given song, they have the ability to build up false expectations and seamlessly swing the intensity 180 degrees.

Consequently, GoMotorCar is not a fill-in-the-blank rock band. They pride themselves on the diversity of their personalities and musical style. With the release of "True Tonight" and the continued support of "When I Feel ----- Sometimes I -----" and "Thanks For Sharing My Head," GoMotorCar expects to captivate the Southwest and beyond in 2003 with its dark and daring approach. One night at a time.

  • excellent sophmore release

Very atmospheric rock that takes a huge number of influences and blends them together into a unique, subtly different style - the song structures don't quite sound like anything you've heard before. Often dark but sometimes just some good old rocking out and great, interesting instrumental slices scattered liberally throughout. Production is occasionally a little rough but the music is excellent; good luck GoMotorCar, hope to see you in all the record stores around here soon.

NICE NICE job GMC!!! This CD rivals ANY national CD I have in my collection. The superbly crafted songs are excellently recorded and produced -- and the sounds they get on songs like Afraid of Love, Divided By and The Crawl begs the question why is this CD not released on a major label? Hope you guys make it big, this CD is amazing.
